SEALNET PROJECT INDONESIA 2018: “BETTER BORDER, BETTER FUTURE”

Education opens to numerous opportunities, but more often, it is a form of privilege. Focus on North Kalimantan, a geographically important area, yet left undeveloped due to isolation, SEALNet Project Indonesia North Kalimantan(PI) 2018 aims to open students life through the lens of education.

Through the course of 2 weeks this summer, the crew of 30 members from PI18 will be giving mental and tangible support to empower the students at Srinanti Village in Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan, about pursuing higher education. Besides the students, with participation from their parents, we hope to have a long lasting yet inspirational impact on the students in the village. From that, the students can project themselves to better opportunities, make better choices, and improve their own lives.

Why Srinanti Village? Indonesia is a nation that is build on factors, including agriculture and education. Although the percentage of the population with access to higher education in Indonesia has increased over the years, there seems to be an adverse effect on Srinanti Village. The fact that there is only one school in the whole village, means that the locals have to travel to neighbouring village, in order to pursue secondary and higher education. Although actions have been done to resolve this problem, the lack of information sources is also one of the main factor that prevents these youths from knowing the extent of possibilities available, as compared to their counterparts in more developed areas of Indonesia.

How is the team going to make it happen? With the 2 project objectives, of helping to increase the number of students pursuing education and instilling confidence in the students to getting decent jobs, we will be having leadership activities and training for the mentees in the 1st week, and service works will be carried out in the 2nd week. Some of the service works that we have planned includes empowering workshops for the students, as well as parents, and we will also be distributing school necessities as a form of tangible support to the school.

By the end of this project, we hope that we could help to further close this gaps with its counterparts in more developed regions of Indonesia, as well as, encourage these youths about achieving their dreams and getting better opportunities for themselves.
