Scooter is an amazing Pekin drake that was abused as a duckling. Neighborhood kids tried to kill him. He was rescued and cared for by an amazing human mommy for two years. I have recently taken over his care and would like to provide him with an even more wonderful life. However, I am barely able to provide for myself. My goal is to somehow make or purchase something so he is able to get around on his own some. He can't walk or fly. He does have one strong leg that I believe would allow him to propel himself some if given the right tools. The other leg is completely crippled. Even after two years, Scooter's other mommy and I find dead Muskovy ducklings, smashed eggs with fully developed babies and injured ducklings. We closely monitor the nests and hatch the many displaced eggs in an incubator. My small home has become a duck hatchery of sorts. They cannot be released outside until they are able to care for themselves. As a result, I spend more on their care than I expected when I commited to help protect them. They eat a lot more than I anticipated when I began this journey to keep these babies safe. As expected, what goes in, must come out. Puppy pads are expensive and I use at least thirty a day to provide a clean environment for the ducklings. Scooter scoots, so puppy pads don't work for him. He gets towels in the bottom of his large cardboard boxes. I really want to buy a portable playpen of sorts so he has more room and can see and enjoy his surroundings. I will need to build a safe area outside for the ducklings, so when they are old enough, I can transition them to independence. Replacement tarps will also need to be purchased. At the present time, they live in a makeshift pen in my bedroom. I'd love to have something a little more permanent for them inside. I also have six elderly indoor cats that my daughter and I care for. The youngest, her baby, was recently diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. The veterinarian recommended euthanasia. Neither of us remotely considered that. His medications are yet another expense added to our already restricted budget. With a lot of TLC, his prescriptions and some supplements, he is improving more everyday. Please consider a donation of any amount to help provide a safe start at life for the innocent ducks that have been victimized at the hands of cruel and insensitive children. Thank you.
