This year, for my 36th birthday, I would like to donate my birthday to a worthy cause and request donations in lieu of gifts for me to the organisation that I co-founded called AmaQawe ngeMfundo (www.amaqawe.org.za).
AmaQawe ngeMfundo is a non-profit organisation that promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning in marginalised communities and schools, using fun and interactive on-site STEM experiments, seminars and workshops. Our ultimate aim is to provide these community schools with STEM laboratories and to inspire our youth to follow careers in science. We currently present programmes at schools in Khayelitsha, the marginalised community where I grew up and first dreamed of becoming a scientist.
AmaQawe ngeMfundo means ‘Heroes through Education’. We strive to see more children overcome their daily challenges and impoverished environment like I did and, through the power of education, become role model ‘heroes’ of their own communities.
All financial donations pledged contributed to this campaign will be used to build and equip a community STEM centre to serve the STEM needs of learners and teachers at schools in Khayelitsha and surrounding areas. At this centre, learners will be guided by skilled STEM professionals and taught how to conduct experiments in grade-specific programmes in their mother tongue isiXhosa and English.
South Africa has a huge need for STEM professionals in education, research and industry. To begin bridging this gap, grassroots STEM enrichment programmes are required to inspire and instil confidence in young people to pursue STEM while at school and at tertiary level.
Financial donations and donations-in-kind of lab coats, safety goggles, chemicals, laptops, science kits, stationery, textbooks, study guides and lunch parcels, pledges towards the acquisition of T-shirts and science-based games and software, or the donation of learning opportunities and experiences will be welcomed.
Join us at my Birthday Fundraiser on 9 March 2019 which is open to ALL and help build the next generation of African scientists and technologists. Details regarding the fundraiser will be posted on our social media pages:
