SCHOOL RESTORATION

   The school is located in a picturesque historical village - Mugla, Bulgaria. It lies in the heart of Rhodope mountain and is surrounded by magnificent forest. The school was built in 1923 and has given education to more than 300 students per year. For its fiftieth anniversary, a new gymnasium and new equipment was bought for the classrooms. By 1989, the population in Mugla reached 1800 inhabitants. Thoughout the years, students have won multiple competitions in folklore singing, theatrical performances, sports and art.

   After the fall of communism, the school was closed and neglected. Most of the children were forced to go to study and live in the closest city-Smolyan which is 26 km. away. As a result, the population has gone down to 237 people (most of them already retired). 

   As a native bulgaria who loves his country, I believe that the 500-years old village may be saved from depopulation by restoring the school. In addition, education is important because without children, the area cannot develop economically. Instead of leaving their roots and going the city, children can obtain agricultural and technical skills. The soil is very fertile, the air and water clean and the weather has four seasons. There are opportunities for beekeeping, woodworking, wool breeding, fishing, milk producation and tourism in the area.

    With the 1,000,000 dollars, I will repair the roof and the wooden bases of the main building, put new windows, paint the rooms, equipt them, re-pave the soccer and basketball fields outside and buy books for the students.
