The objective of the project is to allow approximately 10 refugee students to take part to the 19th annual Odysseus Network Summer School on EU Immigration and Asylum Law and Policy, which will take place in Brussels from 1-12 July 2019.

By participating to the summer school, refugee students will have the possibility to gain knowledge in European immigration and asylum law and to further their education, which may have been interrupted by their forced departure from their home countries. Their time in Brussels will allow them to discover the European capital and the European institutions, which will in turn facilitate their integration into Europe.

Also, most importantly, they will have the chance to tell their stories and have their voice heard, enriching the debate and creating opportunities for future collaboration with students, academics and policy makers.

You can get a better impression of the summer school by watching this video.

In order to support this year's campaign, we created #refYOUgees a social media platform to share faces and stories of persons who believe that a different model of integration is possible. Join us on Instagram and Twitter by following the hashtag #refYOUgees!

The Odysseus Academic Network is a network of experts in European immigration and asylum law from across Europe and coordinated by the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). The network has created a pan-European community of researchers and experts in the field of EU immigration and asylum and, through this strengthened cooperation, it provides a comprehensive analysis of migration issues, both at the European and national levels

The cost for hosting ten refugee students would amount to approximately €10,000, which are needed to cover the cost of transportation, daily expenses in Brussels, and a portion of the tuition fees. We hope to raise this amount through the help of the public as well as of other institutional partners.

Our initial goal is to raise €5,000 and to cover the remaining amount by actively seeking the support of the university community at the ULB, asking staff and students to offer free accommodation to the refugees during the summer school. However, any money raised beyond this amount will contribute to financing another scholarship.

We also thank the generous donors who finance us directly.

The project entails costs which the Odysseus Network - a non-profit organisation - cannot cover alone. The Summer School is entirely self-financed and does not benefit from any financial support other than the fees paid by the participants.

Join us and support this project, even with a small donation! As a thank you, we will send to all donors a booklet containing an overview of the participants and their stories.

If you donate at least €40 to this campaign, you will receive an invitation to meet and speak with the participants. This invitation will also be extended to undergraduate and master's students with a donation of €20 or more.

You can also help by hosting refugee students during their stay in Brussels for the period of the Summer School (1-12 July 2019). Please contact us if you wish to volunteer.

  • I would like to contribute to the Odysseus Summer school scholarship for Refugees. I am fully convinced it is a very useful initiative for refugees. I had the chance to receive this scholarship in 2016, while i was still in the asylum procedure. participating in the summer school was very beneficial for my career and my background. As a result, I work in ECRE as a Policy Officer now. I would like to once again express my sincere gratitude to the Odysseus Summer school, particularly, Professor Philippe De Bruycker. Greetings, Reshad
