Say No to Sex for Fish

Along the shores of Lake Victoria in Homabay County where fishing is the main economic activity numerous women and young girls are involved in sex for fish locally known as “jaboya” to economically sustain themselves. Women and young girls usually give in to fishermen sexual desires so as to get fish at a lower price, or even free fish for them to sell. This culture has resulted to high economic dependence on fishermen by women and young girls which has in turn lead to sexual abuse and high prevalence of HIV/AIDS which is currently at 26.2%. After 2 years working in Homabay county and coming face to face with women and young girls who are regular involved in sex for fish culture, I organized a few women and we set up BRIGHTSTAR WOMEN group to enable women and young girls along the shores to be economically independent by either owning their own fishing boats or undertaking other viable small scale business activities Your donations are meant to enable us reach out to more women and young girls. We aim to educate them on the disadvantages of the sex for fish culture, empower them economically by helping them start viable small scale businesses and start a table banking scheme (revolving fund) to enable them save their earnings and use it to help other women. Your donation, no matter how small, will go a long way in empowering these women and young girls thus reducing abuse and spread of HIV/AIDS.
