Help HiCaliber Horse Rescue save Secret!
This precious filly was born (today!) on May 24, 2016 to Victoria, a mare who was rescued from slaughter when HiCaliber saved her at auction.
Victoria arrived at HiCaliber on January 26, 2016 a skinny, neglected mare. She was taken in by a great foster family who cared for her while she packed on critically-needed weight. She then returned to HiCaliber where she was found to have no peripheral vision.
Just two weeks before Secret's birth, Victoria was noticed to be a little round in the belly. A pregnancy test confirmed our suspicions and it was estimated she would have her foal in 30-60 days.
Victoria's little Secret arrived well ahead of schedule, just one week after the pregnancy was confirmed. Secret was examined by a vet within a few hours of her birth, was up, alert, nursing and doing great.
Sadly, less than 12 hours after she was born, she began to thrash. The vet, who was still on site, sedated the filly and began to administer emergency care. As soon as Secret was stabilized, she was rushed to San Luis Rey Equine Hospital.
Preliminary examination shows a probably equine diaphragmatic hernia, a very costly surgery to repair.
HiCaliber is now fundraising for this little filly's life-saving surgery. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and all donations are tax deductible as allowed by law.
