A recent report by The Independent News estimates that by the year 2050, there will be more plastics than fish in the world’s oceans!

Dear Family and Friends,

My name is (Adrian). My organization, (Saving Utopia), have created this campaign to seek for support funds to help us in our quest to develop biodegradable alternatives (sugarcane straws) to plastic straws.

Brief Introduction

In the same The Independent News report, they estimated that 79 percent of the world’s plastic over the last 70 years had been thrown away in landfills and into the general environment with just a meager 9 percent recycled or incinerated. The effect of this on the environment is massive thus the global push for awareness and support to tackle plastic pollution. Plastics degrade into small pieces overtime, which can be eaten by fishes and other animals and it’s only logical to say “we might already be eating some of these plastics!”

Also, because plastics are made from petroleum, non-renewable resources, its manufacture and destruction by incineration is dangerous. It releases carcinogens, which is a toxic chemical. The theme for the 2018 World Environmental Day “Beat Plastic Pollution” is a wake up call to all of us to come together to find a lasting solution to this ticking bomb. The use of plastics has become an environmental concern especially in developing countries where there are no set regulations. We must all join hands to save our planet and the oceans now!

Our plans

In line with our commitment to save the planet, we have outlined the following as our target;

  • Implement sugarcane takeaway boxes instead of Styrofoam. This will lessen the use of paper boxes as well to save the trees.
  • We know for a fact, companies will not implement due to costing increase, so we raising funds through this crowdfunding campaign to first create awareness and then with the donations, we can implement a "pay it forward" to give the shops our sugarcane straws free for a start until they eventually have to implement and change after consumers are used to it.
