Our mother (Lilian Illingworth) was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. Unfortunately, mom could not afford private medical insurance and had to have surgery to remove the cancer at a government hospital (Johannesburg General). A few days after the operation, we had to rush mom to the nearest hospital after she was experiencing unbearable pain. The nearest hospital is a private hospital but we had no choice, as it was a matter of life and death to have mom treated ASAP. They diagnosed her with septicaemia and informed us that that the septicaemia was caused by the unsuccessful operation she had a few days earlier in the government hospital. Returning her to the government hospital is not an option given her current condition and the treatment she previously received there.
Mom has been in ICU since 16 November 2017. She has to-date had three surgical procedures. The medical fees – theatre, doctors, cat-scans, anaesthetist, ICU – compound each day.
Mom is the most generous, loving person I know, who is now fighting for her life. Although my brother (Shaun) and I are paying as much as we can, we unfortunately are not financial strong enough to afford such large and unexpected amounts.
We are asking for your help - we would greatly appreciate any financial contribution you can afford to make so we can save our mother and continue with the good treatment she is receiving in hospital – every penny will help. Mom has two small grand children who would love to have their granny around for a few more years.
P.S. This fund campaign will be closed once we have paid off the medical debt - any excess funds received will be donated to CHOC.
