Phola is a Johannesburg-based Non-Profit Organisation with a global footprint. The organisation was founded by Ncazelo Mlilo in 2016 to bring mental health and trauma counselling services to disadvantaged communities throughout the world. Our approach to counselling is rooted in Narrative Therapy and Imbeleko principles which make our work culturally sensitive. We believe that people are experts of their own lives, and support them to reclaim their lives from the effects of trauma and related hardships.

We have had tremendous success in the last two years that we have been running our community counselling services, helping over 3000 beneficiaries directly; these have included women and girls affected by gender based violence, people living with disabilities, vulnerable children and other groups. We have also trained 2540 mental health practitioners in our Tree of life, COURRAGE and Narratives in the suitcase methodologies from different parts of the world including the United Kingdom, USA, Australia, Canada, India, Brazil, Greece,, Germany, Kenya, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana etc

Most of our nineteen (19) staff members work as volunteers. They have continued to provide much needed trauma counselling services to communities during the COVID-19 pandemic and shown great commitment and made sacrifices to ensure the ongoing delivery of counselling services to vulnerable groups. We’ve done all this on a shoestring budget.

As the year ends, so has our funding. Our seed funding and donations have been stretched as far as they could, and are now depleted, putting us in an impossible position. We would like to keep our doors open for our beneficiaries, because the alarming numbers of violence against women and children in South Africa particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are appealing to you to help us to continue delivering vital mental health and psychosocial support services for vulnerable communities affected by trauma, violence and related hardships. Your support will enable our team of dedicated staff to continue helping individuals and families and groups to recover from the effects of trauma. We would be extremely grateful to receive once off donations but we are also appealing to you to become a regular donor and give to Phola any amount from £10 monthly.
