His name is Diesel, and he is the clumsiest dog in the world.
What is wrong?
Diesel is a large, four-year-old Great Dane. With that size comes equally large needs. This is certainly true in his visits to the vet, particularly when it comes to any form of operation and along with big operations, comes even bigger costs.
Diesel has torn the cruciate ligament in his left leg, just on the knee. While this may sound simply like a “rest it off” scenario, unfortunately, it is not so simple for our larger canine companions. Something like this happens fairly easily and more often in the larger breeds who – let’s face it – are probably clumsier than we could ever be. This damage could be ignored and it would heal over time to an extent however this would almost certainly lead to the development of severe and early arthritis in his leg; eventually leading to a great deal of pain and even a possible early death. Already severely limping, he has been to see multiple vets and specialists who have given quotes and advice but more importantly, a glimpse into a forked future with our big boy. Either; we forgo the surgery and help him as much we can or we get the surgery done and ease his pain and prolong his life further. To us, the choice was more than obvious. This is where we need your help.
What needs to be done?
To begin, Diesel would need to have the surgery performed by a specialist to either repair or replace his cruciate ligament so that he may once again walk without this terrible burden. However, it does not end there but rather only gets more intense for both us and him as he would need to be in intensive care at the vet for at least 5 days. After which, he will need to be cared for and under restrictions for 6 weeks, until it slowly begins to heal. Hopefully, with lots of love and care, he will get back to his normal self.
Where your support would go:
Diesel’s operation is expensive, to say the least. Our big boy was already a rescue and has been with us for only a month. He has been on a high-protein diet and protein supplements to build up his mass due to his lack of exercise and we stumbled across this once he had started playing with his new sisters in the bigger yard. With your support, we will be giving our gentle giant a new take on life and a fresh start to play and bound around as clumsily as he wants with the girls. Not only would this surgery be prolonging his life but also allowing him the happiness that he deserves. Your support will aid us in paying for the vet bills, medication and special care after the surgery.
However, it will not stop there. Should we receive more funding than we expect, the balance will be donated to the Great Dane Rescuer organization here in South Africa. These fantastic people have only one thing that matters to them and that is the well-being and correct care of these fantastic creatures which we have grown to love over the ages. From the sides of kings to our bedsides, they have always held a special place in our hearts. Great Dane Rescuer aims on re-homing and rehabilitating Great Danes to the best of their ability and it was through them that we found our boy, after looking for a long time. Through your extra support, we will help them continue their amazing work around South Africa.
We all love our pets and we thought: What better way to get help than from our fellow animal lovers? By taking this cause to you, the backers, we may be able to not only aid our massive pup but also spread the awareness that Great Dane Rescuer so deserves. Our gentle giant has touched our hearts like nothing else and we wish to share that with all of our backers, which is why each of you will get constant updates to his condition and regular pictures and a video thrown in here or there, perhaps even a Skype session to meet the big boy for yourself!
Crowdfunding is a great way – we feel – that we can get our Diesel help and therefore be able to spend so much more time with him.
