A couple in Can Tho City are planning to sell their 15-month-old child via adoption order to have money to pay for a c-section to save their unborn child.
Pham Van Chinh said he was introduced to adopt the second child of the family of Ho Thi Quy. But when he visited the family and saw their situation, he told Quy to call for donations instead because he didn't want to separate their family.
Quy's house is in the middle of the field so when she had a haemorrhage at night, her husband had to help her walk across the slippery road to the hospital. Quy's oldest child is four years old and the second child is just 15 months old.
Le Van Tam, Quy's neighbour, said, "Quy and her husband have struggled for a living and searched for snails to eat for years. Their relatives are also poor."
Quy is already nine months into the pregnancy and will go into labour anytime. But she also has heart disease and fibroids. Doctors said they would have to start a c-section because Quy was too ill and the umbilical cord wrapped around the baby's neck.
Since the family doesn't have health insurance, they will have to deposit VND4m (USD160) for the surgery which is a huge sum of money for them. They also don't have anything valuable to sell and thought of selling their 15-month-old child.
