Hi Everyone, good news Poppy has put on a good bit of weight, her coat is looking wonderful and Dr. Huysteen has signed her off as healthy enough for Sterilization, she is going in today and we hope she has a speedy recovery.

Hi All, Here is the latest update on Poppy from out vet. We are keeping her funds aside to use for her when she needs it and if the pain does develop again.

As you know we saw Poppy a couple of weeks after her injury and at that stage the fracture in her leg. Her upper leg (femur) had been badly fractured and crushed in 2 places – 1 was near the knee joint and one seemed to be in/near the hip joint. When we saw her these fracture pieces has already started to fuse, so surgery to correct the fractures was not an option. Poppy was still in a lot of pain at that stage and not using that leg. Over the next few weeks the pain improved and when we last examined her she was moving about well with almost no sign of discomfort. She would allow gentle movement in the leg without looking sore and was “hopping” on it well (not dragging it behind her). Even though she has reduced mobility in that leg it did not seem to be hindering her movements. She also seemed overall much brighter, happy with a shiny coat and had picked up weight. The follow up x-ray showed that the fracture pieces had formed a nice callus (bridge of bone) between them so that they were stable and able to carry her weight without pain. The leg will always be very deformed, and her hip joint has been lost (her body will have to for a fibrous joint in its place). Her leg will never be normal and she will never have normal function. However, if she is in no pain form the leg, I will always prefer to avoid amputation. She has some function in her leg and she seems to still be improving. We discussed with Poppy’s foster that she must continue to monitor her level of discomfort and if at any stage she feels it worsens we can reconsider amputation. For now I am happy that she is coping very well with her deformed leg and that it will benefit more than harm her in the future. Keep well Bernice

Hi All, thank you for the donations so far. Poppy saw the best bunny vet in the country, she agreed the babies needed to be weaned and hand raised, they just gone past 3 weeks of age. She is now on proper pain meds to help her and she is back at the vet again in two weeks time for more xrays. Poppy thanks you all for helping

We have taken a new stray bunny into our care, she needs help. She was hit by a car, shatted her hind leg in multiple places and had to endure giving birth in this condition. We have a rabbit savy vet willing to asses her and likely amputate, its will cost about R6000 or roughly $500 US dollars. Please help if you can
