OVER A DECADE OF LIFESAVING

Myself (Melissa Corbett) and Chevan Clarke started this incredible sport late in our early twenties back in 2012 while Ryle De Morny has been competing and volunteering his time for this sport since he was 6 years old back in 1994.

Although we started years apart the passion and fire we have for this sport is still burning stronger than ever. Ryle has had a decorated and successful career with multiple SA Caps to his name as well as an array of medals and trophies for his many accolades in the sport and on the world stage. His biggest achievement being the first ever "beachie" to win THE DOUBLE (Gold for Sprints and Flags) at World Champs in France in 2014. Ryle is currently still the World Champion for Beach Flags and is frothing to retain his title at this years World Champs.

Although Chevan and I were late to the lifesaving game we too have been honoured to represent our country with Chevan getting his first cap last year for the team that headed off to Egypt. His hard work and dedication saw him getting a silver for Flags, an excellent result for his SA Team Debut. My first SA Team appearance was back in 2016 when I got to join the team heading to Japan for the Sanyo Cup. I got podium finishes for both sprints and flags and have since been hungry for more. I was also privileged to be part of the team that competed in the the International Surf Rescue Challenge in Durban in 2019.

THE PLAN THAT CAME TOGETHER

It was the beginning of March 2020 and we were putting in the final bits of training for what was set to be the most epic SA Champs we had ever competed at. We were in prime condition and ready to take on whatever was thrown at us. What we weren't ready for was COVID-19 and were obviously completely gutted when the competition had to be canceled along with World Champs that was supposed to be taking place in September of that year in Italy.

Since then we have been training and sacrificing our time, money & energy to maintain our performance as well as keep our bodies in shape and in once piece. Our first competition back was in October 2021 where we were called back for SA Champs. This was a weird one for us as the competition was small but it was just enough for us to reignite our competitive fire.

Post SA Champs 2021 and during race prep for SA Champs 2022 in March I vividly remember a conversation between the 3 of us. Chevan called the 3 of us together and said " Guys, we can do this! Let's go to Italy! I want us to all go together. One last one together"

We knew it was something that could definitely be done but it wasn't a given and we needed to give it our absolute all. The competition went exactly as we had hoped and we were extremely proud of our performances that we gave. We had done everything we could and now just awaited the team selection.

WE MADE IT - TEAM SOUTH AFRICA

The team was announced and for the first time in years the selectors chose 2 beachies which meant all 3 of us had made the team. We did it! We had done what we could and our plan came together! We are all in our 30s so realistically this tour will most likely be one of our last so the fact that we get to do it all together is so incredible. We have been through a-lot together and I couldn't ask for better training partners and friends to have with me on this journey. A welcomed surprise was that Chevan and I were also chosen to Captain the Senior Team which is the ultimate privilege and honour.

To make the South African team is such an honour but as most know it comes with a large financial burden as the sport of Lifesaving is mostly self-funded. As an athlete our dream is always to focus on what we can do to be better athletes, how to get faster, stronger, better. But as a South African Team athlete this has to take a back seat as the thing that weighs most on our mind is " How will we be able to afford this tour?".

HELP SAVE THE LIFEGUARDS

This is where we need your help. Help us focus on just being athletes and doing the best that we can do to represent our country and make you all proud. We need assistance to help get us to Italy to represent South Africa at the World Champs in September this year.

We are looking to raise R90 000 for the 3 of us to go to Italy. This amount will include our flights, visas, kit, accommodation, transport, entry fees as well as training camps and food while on tour.

Any amount will be greatly appreciated to help get us there. No donation is too small and we promise to put in the work to make you all and South Africa proud.
