There's an orphanage in Ampang, Malaysia, with a hundred kids and they are in urgent need of funds to continue running the home.

The name is Sunbeams Home and it was started by my former teacher, Mr Tan, in 1995. At first he had only 2 kids! Most of these kids are not orphans but they come from rather funny backgrounds. Such as parents who are criminals, underworld and thugs, drug addicts, alcoholics, single parents, gamblers, etc etc. All are colorful characters, many of which are wife beaters and child abusers. Mr dear teacher Mr Tan took them all in, poor little kids.

Now there's a problem. With the economy in Malaysia in shambles due to mismanagement and kleptocracy times are so bad that donations are coming in too slowly. Mr Tan didn't have any help from the government or any big corporations doing CSR (corporate social responsibility), but rather all his money came from the small guy - the man on the street - market hawkers, caring individuals, friends and his former school boys like me, some who continue supporting him generously and faithfully every month throughout the years. But now with the economy like this, most of his ardent fans are also feeling the pinch, but still nevertheless trying their very best to continue supporting him. They just couldn't bear to see him carry the burden alone.

There was a kind contractor who helped to build bigger premises for him to house all his kids. He sponsored both materials and workmanship. But when he tried to do another building he also got stuck halfway because the property sector slowed down and he too was affected. The building which was supposed to help separate the children into boys and girls dorms was temporarily halted. Even so Mr Tan says it's right now not a priority. Filling the stomachs of the kids is more important.

P/S Mr Tan once saved my life by rushing me on time to the hospital when I was in sixth form in the school. I had an emergency medical condition. So, he's my life saver.
