I'm reaching out on behalf of two family owned local businesses "Next Station" and "Why Not Bar," located in Pai, Thailand. Like so many other countries in the world, the citizens in Thailand, are struggling. People who have spent years pouring their heart and soul into building up their small family businesses, have had them swept out from under their feet in a matter of months.
Unfortunately in Thailand, citizens who have lost their jobs and have no work, are not receiving stimulus checks, and rent is not deferred. Pandemic or no pandemic, rent is still due and due on time. In Thai culture, the children help support their parents, so the fact that sons and daughters who were business owners, have nothing coming in, is creating a devastating domino effect. Your support would not only be going to the businesses and helping to pay expenses and rent during this time but also to the staff and helping support their families, helping the staff who again, have nothing coming in and no relief coming soon.
For reference, Pai is a very small town in a valley in the middle of the mountains of Northern Thailand. The closest big city is a three hour drive down switchback mountains making it already a pretty isolated location. It’s a town that relies heavily on tourism, which is currently non-existent. Everything has been shut down since beginning of March. Though bars can now open as long as they are selling food, the streets once busy with tourists, are empty and there is no one to sell to. They are estimating that international travel won't be allowed till September. They also can’t compete with any alcohol prices found at the big company chain stores.
Next Station is run by three local families, and Why Not Bar is also owned by my family, my friends. For a year now, everyone has worked so hard to get Next Station up and running only to have it ripped away. Why not has been a work in progress and has finally made a name for itself. No one is ready to give up and just let them go without a fight.
The goal to pay rent, expenses and be able to take care of Thai staff for the upcoming months is about 4000 USD. We understand that times are hard for everyone right now, but please know that any donated amount, anything at all, is perfect and appreciated, bringing everyone one step closer to keeping the businesses secure and the staff taken care of. Also know that any overflow we receive that we can give, will also go to surrounding small businesses and families in Pai. This is a country that relies on tourism, and who knows when tourist will be able to return or will return.
Thank you so much for your kindness. <3
