===============================================================================

Cyprus Food Virtual Museum:

A gastronomical journey through the local flavours of Cyprus

A revolutionary museum to do with Cypriot cuisine

The diet of the local people in Cyprus is one of the elements that create their identity and is also a contributing factor that strengthens the ties between them. It is a part of the country’s intangible cultural heritage, which showcases the people’s habits and their spirit towards life.

The endurance of the Cypriot diet continues until today because of the people’s love for tradition and the island. Unfortunately though, foreign lifestyles, the industrialization of most food items and the lack of time to prepare homemade traditional dishes, pose a great threat to the survival of Cypriot cuisine. Due to these facts, the Cyprus Food Virtual Museum was created. Its aim is to pass on the island’s food heritage to future generations to come.The museum creates a bridge, connecting young people to the memories and our rich past related to Cypriot food and nutrition.

The museum’s website (http://foodmuseum.cs.ucy.ac.cy/) is an innovative digital platform promoting the gourmet tradition of Cyprus throughout the ages to an international audience. Within the website you can find recipes for main dishes and desserts from all the parts of the island, as well as the ways in which food can be prepared. These preparation methods make us reminisce about the aromas and local tastes of our homeland. The website also contains information about cooking utensils, other traditional cooking tools and meals, while also hosting information from seven museums on the island. This virtual museum tour enables visitors to wonder around the different rooms of the museum and view the objects within each room, even if they are thousands of miles away.

Documentary about traditional food and flavours

The museum’s activates (http://foodmuseum.cs.ucy.ac.cy/web/guest/news) include the creation of a series of documentaries about Cypriot traditional food (http://bit.do/foodmuseum-DVDs). These documentary films contribute to the museum’s aim to introduce and connect young people to the traditions of the island, as well as the preservation of our cultural heritage. The films are valuable assets to any home and can be used at different events. They can also be screened in schools in Cyprus and abroad where there are Cypriot communities, to help students better understand the concept of cultural heritage and why it is so important to know about it and protect it. The museum’s agenda also includes plans to create a new documentary about traditional recipes and food in Cyprus.

Important information about the online platform

The online platform is open and accessible to everyone. In its eight years of existence, the platform has received half a million users and nearly two million views. On a weekly basis, 3000 to 5000 users visit the website, mainly from Cyprus and Greece. Significant traffic is also seen from countries where there are Cypriot communities (United Kingdom, USA, Australia and Canada). Users reach over 154 countries and the majority of users (60%) are from 18 to 34-years-old. It is very important to mention the fact that traffic to the website is continuously increasing year after year. Also, a part of the museum’s collection exists in the largest digital platform for cultural heritage in Europe; Europeana (https://www.europeana.eu/portal/en), which has over 54 million entries.

The Survival of the Cyprus Food Virtual Museum

The aim of the Cyprus Food Virtual Museum managers and its collaborators is the continuously development its activities and the addition of further data to its collection from people who work in the wider field, and people who appreciate tradition and want to contribute to its preservation. Despite the attempts to preserve and renew the website, it survives under difficult conditions and its running is mostly made possible by voluntereers. The cost of improving and maintaining the online platform is extensive and financial support is essential for its future existence. We know that a large number of Cypriot dishes and food have now been forgotten in general and only the older generation still remember them. In these modern times, the urgent need to record live testimonials and the preparation of Cypriot dishes from the few people who lived at the time when tradition thrived, requires the use of filming and photography equipment, which have a cost.

The website also needs to be immediately redesigned, and reoganised in order to give it a more modern look, a friendlier navigation system and improved functionality. Its material also needs to be translated into English so that non-Greek speakers can also use the website.Furthermore

How we can all contribute to keeping the Cyprus Food Virtual Museum up and running

The Cyprus Food Virtual Museum website is the digital window to the gourmet culture of Cyprus. Any support given to the museum is part of a national project, as the support helps preserve history, tradition and culture. Your contribution is of great importance.

In what other ways you can help;

  • You can promote this document to friends, acquaintances, on social media and to the media.
  • Buy the museum’s films and publications, which document the history and tradition of Cypriot cuisine in a unique way. These films and publications undoubtedly build bridges that connect young people and coming generations to knowledge about the tradition of our homeland and our cultural heritage. Our country’s legacy is also passed down from one generation to the next. The available films for purchase are: documentaries about carobs and how they are processed, a film about traditional recipes that have carob and carob syrup as their main ingredient, a double DVD with traditional recipes from Agros village (http://bit.do/foodmuseum-DVDs ). A film about traditional dairy products is currently being prepared. A publication about Street Food is also being prepared for release (to be published in September 2018) and a publication about the dairy products of Cyprus and another about the carobs of Cyprus are in the pipelines.
  • Become a sponsor of our publications and for the museum’s other activities and receive significant rewarding benefits. For example, the Cyprus Food Virtual Museum intends to add a number of features about the Mediterranean diet to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation of UNESCO network. In order to complete the forms needed to submit the items, to perform research and provide audio-visual material to support each item, financial support is needed.
  • We invite everyone who is interested to send us material to enrich our website, such as photographs and traditional recipes, and suggestions about future collaborations.
