HELP US RESCUE ABUSE, SICK & INJURED STRAYS

Save Our Strays Association Kuching or more commonly known as “S.O.S Kuching”. Our organisation is a registered non-profit animal welfare group with the main objective to control and reduce the stray population in Kuching through humane approach, to create and increase awareness on animal welfare and promote compassion and kindness towards animals, providing assistance to strays and abandoned pets in need of medical attention, advocate on responsible pet ownership etc.

During the early set up of our organisation, our core activity is the Trap, Neuter, Release/Rehome (TNR) programme to reduce and manage the stray population. Since the start of rabies outbreak in July 2017 in Sarawak, we incorporated the anti-rabies vaccination in our programme with the aim to create rabies immunity barrier in our stray population to prevent the spread of rabies. This is an effective method adopted by World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the measures to control rabies outbreak in many countries. This programme is known worldwide as Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release/Rehome (TNVR).

In addition, with the help of volunteers from the community, we initiate responsible feeding of strays; fostering of sick or injured strays and abandoned pets; organised adoption drives to rehome rescued animals; investigate and attend to animal cruelty cases and conduct rescue missions for sick, injured and abused animals. To date, we have rescued more than 4,500 dogs and cats. All rescued animals will be spayed/neutered and vaccinated before being released or rehomed.

In late August 2018, at the fervent request from the public, we set up a Temporary Emergency Shelter (TES) before the commencement of the Mass Culling Operation on 1 September 2018 to house as many of our TNVR strays as possible to save them from death row. These dogs are spayed/neutered and vaccinated against rabies with the support from public donations to create a natural barrier against the spread of rabies. However, since rabies outbreak was declared as a Level 2 Disaster earlier this year, the culling operation was escalated to cover the entire State. In view of this, our TES has since taken in more TNVR dogs and currently housed more than 400 TNVR dogs.

The monthly rental, utilities costs, dog food, medical fees and miscellaneous expenses are an additional hefty load to our organization.

Our expenses for our rescue, rehoming, spay/neuter and vaccination operations outlined above are in the region of approximately RM35,000.00 per month and that for our TES is around RM20,000.00 per month excluding unforeseen medical costs. We solely rely on donations from the general public in the form of monetary or in kind and through organizations of fund raising events to sustain our operations.
