In late 2020, I realize that my son's eyes looked like it was cast or crossed. With this observation, on January 2, 2021, I took him to see the doctor and was referred to Bustamante Children's Hospital. When I took him there, they sent me to an Optometrist to get his eyes tested and it was discovered that he's not seeing from his right eye and he also had poor vision in the left eye. I was told to take him back to Children's Hospital immediately for an urgent surgery. I immediately left the optometrist and went straight to the Children's Hospital and was informed that because of the pandemic, they are only doing emergency surgeries so I should return on April 23, 2021. I went back to the Optometrist and was given another referral to take him to The University of the West Indies Hospital. I got an appointment to see their Paediatric Ophthalmologist for February 18, 2021. They too informed me of the same policy that only emergency surgeries were being done but I should come back on March 23, 2021 to see their Head Ophthalmologist Consultant. I took back Nathan to University of the West Indies Hospital and the consultant informed me that his surgery is indeed urgent and it should have been done already because his sight is worse now than it was the first time he came in February. He also said that the longer the surgery was delayed, the harder it would be to be corrected as the section that sends messages from the eye to the brain would eventually stop working, and the harder his recovery will be. This would also require several follow ups and therapy. I was then given a date to return in November of 2021.
In the midst of all of this, I had to stop Nathan from school to reduce his time on the tablet. One day I sent him to play since he was not able to attend school online. While he was riding his bicycle his sight went and he fell down the stairs. I rushed him back to The Bustamante Children's hospital and he was immediately admitted. After being seen by six (6) Resident Ophthalmologists , Nathan was discharged from the Hospital and placed on their waiting list for surgery. I was further advised that they cannot give a time when I will be called. He was also placed on a similar waiting list at The University Hospital of the West Indies. The best option was nor to get this surgery done privately due to its urgency.
I could not wait as my child’s eyesight was deteriorating daily and as such, I was referred to see two (2) private ophthalmologists. Upon being examined by both, it was discovered that since birth he has never seen from his right eye and there has never been any communication between his right eye and his brain due to irregularities in lens. Nathan was diagnosed with Congenital Posterior Polar Cataract.
We now have to remove the Cataract from his eye and his lens also has to be removed and replaced with an artificial lens. The artificial lens will only allow Nathan to see things from a distance so he will need to wear glasses to see things that are close to him. Our hope and prayer is that after his surgery his brain will start to communicate with his eyes. He will need to have numerous follow up visits to the Ophthalmologist and therapy sessions. Presently, he is unable to see objects that have curves or dimensions. Simple tasks like going to the bathroom and holding objects like a jug have proven challenging for him. Based on the diagnosis, Lensectomy and Anterior Vitrectomy for Congenital Posterior Polar Cataract Surgery is required immediately as every day is another day that results in more deterioration. It is my hope and prayer that those reading this will be moved to help us to raise the funds for this surgery so as to give my son a chance to see and to live a life as normal as is possible. His sight means everything to us. We would be eternally grateful for your financial assistance in this medical emergency. God bless you all.
