Help Mike on his road to recovery after left leg amputation due to accident in Thailand

Update posted by Michael Johnston On Mar 19, 2019

Hello! and an update on Mike. Firstly Mike has asked me to thank each and everyone who has kindly donated to his campaign and for all the messages of support during the last weeks, he is truly thankful for all the support. Mike is at home continuing his recovery and rehabilitation process. In a few weeks Mike will start the physio at hospital which will over a period of months lead to getting Mike back up and walking again with his new prosthetic limb. It will take some adjustment but Mike is young, fit and strong and with the professional help from his carers he will get there. Thank you from all the family.

Hello, an update on Mike.

We have just found out he has also injured his hand which has been diagnosed as broken and is in a plaster cast. Hopefully Mike will go for an operation tomorrow to close the wound on his leg and further help on his road to recovery.Although Mike is still very unwell but we are hoping that the progress though slow will keep going in the right direction.

Thank You

Michael

Hello,

I just want to update everyone on Mike. The good news is we managed to get Mike home on Sunday night at 10pm. It was a long hard trip for Mike but we now have him at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where he is receiving the best possible care on his journey to health and rehabilitation. Mike will now spend a few weeks here before moving on for further care at another hospital in Belfast. I would like to thank each and every one for the kind words and donations which kept us going through a very difficult time. We really do appreciate this.

Mike is still in a lot of pain and the path to rehabilitation and adjustment will be long but with the best possible care we hope he can lead a full and happy life. I will of course keep you updated on Mikes progress during the coming days and weeks.

Thank you again from all Mikes family.

Regards,

Michael

Hello, this is Mikes dad Michael

I just want to update you on Mikes current situation. He is now 3 days post operation and although in a lot of pain and under the influence of pain relief and other meds he is a little bit better. We still have a long way to go on the path to rehab and recovery but it all starts from here.

Getting Mike home is our first priority and I will keep everyone updated as this plan progresses over the coming days. This of course is a very fluid situation which is being assessed on an ongoing basis by the medical team in Bangkok

Mike has asked me to thank everyone for their good wishes and very kind campaign support.

He is really very appreciative of all this help from friends here in Thailand and from everyone back home in Ballymena.

Thanks and regards,

Michael and Jill

Bangkok, 13th feb morning: Unfortunately, nothing could have been done to save his leg, he has been transferred yesterday by ground ambulance from Chumphon to Bangkok, 7 hours trip, and was admitted at BNH hospital around 10pm last night. A few hours later, in the early morning today 13th february, the surgeon decided to proceed to the amputation of Mike's leg, above the knee level despite efforts to keep his knee.

He is expected to stay 3 days in ICU and another 8 days in obversation room at BNH hospital, but the doctor told us that he could only fly back to the UK in 2 or 3 weeks.
