SAVE BEATRICE

Update posted by brightmolly On Nov 19, 2013

Beatrice as of 11/19/13

The antibiotics and the steroids haven't helped at all. We stopped the steroids. She has gotten another bloodwork to get a clue what's going on internally. The good news from that was that she doesn't seem to have hypothyroidism, which was a concern before. However, she may have Addison's disease. ;-(

None of that explains her skin, however. So she needs another skin biopsy and a scraping.

I'm so frustrated that the diagnosis is taking so long and she is getting visibly worse every day. I am still severely under employed and in a financially dangerous spot; I don't have any more money to put towards this. I really need more donations to pay for her testing.

I just want to know if this is treatable or not. I'm scared because it hasn't responded to either of the antibiotics.

Thank you to everyone who have donated already. Please continue to spread the word. You are a blessing!

After a follow-up examination with my vet, Beatrice got an urgent visit with the vet dermatologist across the bay. Not sure if it is an autoimmune disease or a bacterial infection. We're now trying a new antibiotic and a dose of steroids. Taking it one day at a time. The dermatologist recommended getting new blood tests and a visit with an internal medicine specialist. The two examinations + meds + travel cost me $326.50 so I need to fundraise more money. Please help as you are able!

Here's some photos from our morning medication session...

Beatrice wrapped up like a burrito! I have the glove on for applying the ointment to her anus and vulva. I'm giving her the antibiotic first because she dislikes the taste.

What a good little patient! I don't even have to hold her snout this morning.

Close up. You can see how the irritated skin around her mouth is getting worse. She still has some scabbing along the lip area.

She had her follow-up with the vet today and he suggested that I take her to a dermatologist to get an opinion on the skin issue. We have to continue with her medication routine until the 21st. The hope is that the dermatologist has a solution otherwise the vet said we would need to go the route of steroids, which can have nasty side effects.

So much gratitude to my roommate who cared for Beatrice and give her all her meds while I had to go out of town!

Beatrice is recovering rather well. Her breath no longer smells like infection. Her energy levels are back to normal. She is no longer whimpering in pain, though she is rubbing at her face and her rear end irritates her after I put on the ointment. The area around her mouth still has sores and her eyes and nose seem to be dripping more than usual.

The vet called and said that the biopsies showed no sign of an autoimmune disease - Phew! She has her follow-up appointment Friday, Oct. 11th to get her stitches out and see how the infection is doing.

Okay, so 8 teeth less and the cause of the severe infection is still unknown, but Beatrice seems to be managing alright. Already the infected area around her mouth is looking better. The nurse said that in her six years she's never seen an infection like this before. They took three biopsies and based on those results will have to determine what to do from there. She has more antibiotics, a painkiller, an ointment for the irritation that recently formed on her anus and vulva, and a medication for yeast infection.

The bill so far: $2,135

She has to come in in 12 days for a follow-up appointment. Hopefully the biopsies will shed light on if she has an autoimmune disease.

This fundraiser will continue to be open so please share this with your friends, family, and fellow animal-lovers!

I got the call that she's awake from the anesthesia and the procedure went well. They took some biopsies and the vet is convinced that the issue is not cancerous. They did have to pull several teeth and they aren't entirely sure yet the cause of the infection - it may be an autoimmune disease. There's more tests to do. On top of the bacterial infection there may be a yeast infection so further medication will be necessary. That's what I got over the phone. I'm going to pick her up at 3:30 pm and get the full report including the bill. But the good news is - no sign of cancer! :-)

I'm feeling so grateful for all of the support we've received so far. Thank you so much to those who have already donated and/or have spread the word! You are a blessing!

I got this email from the vet:

Hi Molly:

Please find enclosed Beatrice's blood reports from today.  As you can see, many values are in normal range but few are concerning. I think her white cell count is high with Neutrohils @ 140007 (2060-10600) because of sever oral infection and gum disease and teeth issues.  Calcium and Potassium may be off because of ability to eat or may be it is something else underlying. Thyroid with T4 @ < 0.5 (0.8-3.5) is very low , making me, think it coudl eb a real Hypothyroidism. As T4 can be "Temporarily" dragged down by other concurrent health issues (like oral infections), before I start on life long thyroid supplement, I want to verify T4 by adding a test called "T4 by ED" to the blood tets already submitted. We, however, need your permission for this ~ $84.00 test. Please call us to let us know if we can add that test.

Rest of the values we will recheck in about 2-4 weeks and my hope is they will reset in to normal range after we have fixed the severe oral issue.

Thank you for being a caring mom for Beatrice and including us in her health care team.

I'm hoping we can hold off on testing the thyroid with T4 if possible. I'm going to ask the vet about it. I'm also planning on calling some other vets tomorrow to get a few other opinions and pricings.

Tonight, after I fed Beatrice some raw food puree instead of kibble, I administered the mouth rinse and gave her the liquid antibiotic. She did not enjoy me prying her mouth open and squirting fluids in, but I'm hopeful that it will help.
