Our mom, fondly called 'Baby' by all her family and friends had suffered a severe heart attack last June 6. At 69 years old, she has been taking care of a husband, who has suffered a stroke; attending to a 38-year old son, who has some mobility and trauma issues due to an explosion incident years ago; and caring for a 9-year old grandson. She has also been active in community activities for years.

Prior to her heart attack, she has been experiencing chest pain and difficulty breathing, until that Saturday, when the pain was so severe, she finally agreed to be taken to the hospital. In the emergency room, her heart rate and blood pressure were through the roof. After some medication, she underwent angiogram procedure, a diagnostic test that uses x-rays to take pictures of blood vessels. As explained to us by her doctors, all her main vessels have blockage. Only 16% of her heart is functioning well. The doctors have explained to us that the best option for her is to have an 'open heart surgery' to repair the damage for a long term. It is a risky procedure because of her severe condition, but the possibility of survival and recovery is much greater.

It took a while to convince mom to take this surgery because of fear, but she has so much in her that definitely wants to live, outlive this condition.

Thanks to the help and prayers of family and friends, we were able to get through her surgery. It was a successful operation, and the complications the doctor feared will happen during the surgery did not happen. However, a week into her recovery, we were told that mom had acquired pneumonia, and she had been on medication since. She had to undergo another major procedure--- bronchoscopy to be able to clear her secretions in the lungs and support her collapsing left lung. The procedure also went well, clearing up the lung as the doctors intended. However, a few days later, she would encounter the same problems again. Because she had just undergone a bypass heart surgery, her attending doctors ruled out against a bronchoscopy procedure. They instead ordered a tracheostomy procedure which should be able to support her breathing while extubated and clear out her secretions through the trache tube. We are hoping that this will finally be able to address the condition of her lungs.

We are already going on our third week in the coronary care unit (CCU) of the hospital, and mom has been doing so great in battling through her condition, agreeing to do all these procedures amidst all her fears, and pain going through all of them. Her courage is so admirable which inspires each one of us in the family.

My siblings and I have all contributed our personal funds, while some friends and relatives also shared what they can so we can pay a portion of the medical bills. However, due to pandemic, we have all been crippled financially with ‘Leave Without Pay’ and reduced work schedule. We, her family are doing the best we can to give her the best care she deserves, so we are knocking on the good heart of everyone to help us get through this too, financially for her medical bills.

We thank you for your kindness.
