In 2015, my father, the sole breadwinner of our family then, lost his job and our family was left to survive without an income. Since then, he has been working as a Grab driver to make ends meet. It hasn't been easy but we've been able to get by, especially with the generosity of my friends.
After the release of my A Level results in 2017, I decided to put off further studies until the family situation had stabilized. I took on multiple jobs to repay my debts to my friends and to help lessen the financial burden on my parents. My mother went back to work after 10 years. Life was difficult and there were months when we thought we wouldn't make it, but we somehow scraped by.
In November of 2018, my father got into a minor traffic accident, where he accidentally bumped two pedestrians while making a turn at a green light, having not seen them due to a blind spot. In over 20 years of driving, my father has never been involved in an accident. We did not think much of the accident then, as no one had gotten injured.
In mid-June 2019, he was charged with negligent driving which would effectively take away his license. We would lose one of our main sources of income. To make matters worse, my mother was fired from her minimum wage retail job on the same day. In one fell swoop, we had lost two major sources of income and we still had a mortgage and a paralyzing amount of debt to pay back.
I am still up to my ears in debt to my friends, though they have been more than generous with me. I cannot bear to burden them even more with my personal problems. If you have reached the end of this pathetic sob story, I hope you find it in your heart to donate to us.
