Save a 5-Year Old Heart

Our five year old son, Zack Lucien "Luc" Sison-Dizon, was born with a heart condition - Transposition of the Great Ateries, Atrial Septal Defect, Ventricular Septal Defect and Pulmonic Stenosis. He was separated from me when he was born on June 13, 2011 and I never got the chance to see or hold him then as he was immediately rushed to the Philippine Heart Centre while I was recovering in Angeles University Foundation Hospital in Angeles City.

Baby Luc underwent Balloon Atrial Septostomy in PHC two (2) days after he was born. Three months after, he underwent Modified Blalock Taussig Shunt procedure in Chinese General Hospital, Manila.

We were informed by the doctors that he will need at least four (4) open heart surgeries in his lifetime. This December 2016 would be his first open heart surgery and we tried to prepare ourselves as parents and our child for this event because of the expense and recovery period that he would require.

Unfortunately, my husband had an accident in January 2015 and had to undergo surgery that cost us Php 160,000.00. Luc and I met another accident in September 2016, which devastated and traumatised us not only financially but also emotionally.

Our fragile little Luc suffered fractures in his left leg and had to wear a cast for six weeks. His already sensitive condition was aggravated by this incident a few weeks before the open heart surgery that we have been preparing for since he was born. We spent about Php 115, 000.00 in medical expenses, money that could have likewise been saved for the open heart surgery.

Our resources are not enough to finance Luc's open heart surgery. The semi-private package in the hospital for the Rastelli Operation (exclusive of conduit) amounts to more or less Php 590,000.00. We have yet to source the conduit, and post-op expenses would still be costly.

We love our son so much and would do anything to keep him alive and healthy. The surgery will surely improve the quality of his life, as he is a happy and handsome boy. He likes to play and laugh and talk to people.
