Hola! Mi Nombre es Ingrid Briano. Desde hace dos meses estoy en Kenia haciendo mis prácticas profesionales en el Condado de Samburu, con la tribu del mismo nombre. A lo largo de este tiempo que he vivido entre ellos he conocido mucho de su vida y sus necesidades. La mayoría de la población vive en pobreza extrema y sus necesidades son incontables. Sé que no puedo resolver los problemas de todos, pero entre todos los casos hay uno que necesita de acción inmediata.

Él es Daniel Leleur. Este niño nació con encephalocele, un defecto cerebral en el cual el tejido y líquido cerebral salen del cráneo formando una protuberancia. Está acompañado de anormalidades craneofaciales, cuadriplejia espástica, ataxia e hidrocefalia – una acumulación de líquido en el cerebro. Él ha pasado sus primeros tres años y medio de vida viviendo en la remota y empobrecida comunidad de Garma, en el Condado de Samburu, Kenia. Daniel sufre de malnutrición severa, su principal alimento es té con un poco de leche. Hace un par de meses su padre murió, dejando a la familia totalmente desamparada. Daniel nació en su casa y fue ocultado debido a su deformidad, y nunca tuvo tratamiento médico alguno. Después de la muerte de su padre, su tía Susan Cheptoo (quien a su vez es una viuda luchando por criar a sus cuatro hijos ella sola) logró juntar una pequeña cantidad de dinero para llevarlo a un hospital en Kijabe, cerca de Nairobi. Las tomografías mostraron que el niño necesita una cirugía urgente para liberar la presión en su cerebro causada por la hidrocefalia. Incluso podría someterse a una cirugía para remover la encephalocele y reconstruir su cara. El hospital donde lo están atendiendo ofrece excelentes servicios a las familias en necesidad extrema y el costo de los procedimientos ha sido reducido enormemente. Desafortunadamente, careciendo de los fondos necesarios hasta para comprar comida, la señora no puede pagar las cirugías. La primera cirugía que se le practicó a Dany costó alrededor de 740 USD, y la siguiente se espera cueste alrededor de 1500 USD. Esto no incluye los gastos de viaje, hospedaje durante la estancia en Kijabe, exámenes médicos adicionales, chequeos médicos posteriores y medicamentos necesarios.

En el mismo solar vive también Neitemwa, prima de Daniel, quien fue trasladada con él al hospital en su primera cirugía y fue diagnosticada con parálisis cerebral. La niña tampoco ha tenido atención médica alguna, sufre de malnutrición severa y a sus 8 años pesa 12 kilos, no habla ni puede caminar. Los padres de ambos niños fallecieron recientemente, sus mamás ocupan gran parte del día recolectando leña y agua, por lo que los niños están al cuidado de su abuela, una anciana ciega de un ojo y quien no tiene un brazo… en cualquier caso imaginen la dificultad de cuidar en estas condiciones a dos niños que no pueden valerse por sí mismos.

Se espera que ambos niños puedan aprender a valerse por si mismos si reciben el tratamiento, terapia y nutrición adecuados.

Con tu donativo estarás ayudando a cambiar la vida de esta familia. El dinero se entregará a Susan, tía de los niños, quien es una persona muy responsable y confiable. Ella es una líder comunitaria que por años ha luchado por el desarrollo de su comunidad, logrando bajar considerablemente los niveles de alcoholismo, impartiendo capacitaciones acerca del cuidado del ambiente y también es voluntaria de salud, aparte de catequista. Ella juntó el dinero para la primera cirugía de Daniel. El dinero de esta campaña ayudará a completar el costo de la operación (aún faltan 400 usd), a cubrir los gastos de relacionados con ella, y a crear un fondo para que cada semana se le lleve una despensa a esta familia para atacar la desnutrición de los niños. 3 ½ year old Daniel Leleur desperately needs your support for a life-saving surgery, aftercare, transportation and the food he needs to heal from a rare brain disorder called encephalocele (en-seff-a-lo-see-lee).

What is Encephalocele?

Encephaolocele, as simply as possible, is when skull fusion does not occur fully during fetal development, and brain matter protrudes in a sac-like manner through openings in the skull.

Untreated, the disorder causes abnormal accumulation of fluid in the brain, paralysis of the arms and legs, smaller than average head size, poor coordination and unsteadiness, developmental delays, vision problems, growth stunting, and seizures.

How did Daniel get this disorder?

Daniel was born in in the remote, impoverished region of Garma in Samburu County, where residents live on less than $1.25 per day. Because of food insecurity in this region, Daniel was born with this disorder as a result of prenatal malnutrition.

Why am I helping Daniel?

Because his deformity was misunderstood, Daniel was hidden away for the first years of his life, and has not received the treatment that, in the US, would’ve occurred at 4 months of age. In addition, Daniel’s father passed away several months ago, leaving him and his cousin, Neitemwa (whose father also died and has cerebral palsy) reliant on his mothers and grandmother in a society where options for women to earn money are severely limited.

With our help, Daniel can receive the care, transportation, and food he needs to overcome this disorder, and live as healthy and normal a life as every child deserves.

What does Daniel Need?

Daniel’s aunt (herself a widow, struggling to raise 4 children), raised a small amount of money to get a diagnosis for Daniel at charitable hospital in Kijabe (near Nairobi). At Kijabe Hospital, which offers deeply discounted services to needy families, it was discovered that Daniel needed:

Immediate surgery to relieve pressure on the brain caused by the hydrocephalus sac through the placement of a shunt. ($740 USD, already paid for)

Eventual surgery to remove the sac, and repair his face. ($1500 USD)

Ongoing care, therapy, and maintenance of the shunt as he grows.

What will the money we raise pay for?

In addition to paying for the care listed above, we recognize that truly helping Daniel to heal and recover requires more than just surgery. In addition to treatment, your generous donations will pay for:

Travel costs for the day-long journey required each time he receives treatment.

Lodging costs outside of Nairobi for the family that accompanies him to procedures.

Food costs to keep Daniel and the family who cares for him nourished for as long as possible. ($15 per week for the entire family.)

You’ll be helping Daniel’s cousin, Neitemwa, as well.

In addition to helping Daniel directly, money raised will also indirectly benefit Daniel’s cousin, Neitemwa, who suffers from cerebral palsy, and because of severe malnourishment only weighs 26 pounds (12 kilos) at 8 years of age.

Through your support, Neitemwa will receive the following:

The opportunity to access care when Daniel is taken to Kijabe Hospital.

Food that will help her to attain a healthy weight, and improve her nutrition.

The cost of care required when Daniel is taken out of Garma alone for treatment.

How will the money and food be delivered?

Daniel’s Aunt, Susan, will hold the money in a secure account, ensuring it is used for Daniel’s care and all the associated costs.

In addition, Susan will ensure that the family recieves the necessary amount of food each week.

Who am I?

I am Ingrid Briano, and while volunteering in Samburu Country helping with food security, I met Daniel. While there are many people amongst the Samburu who could use help and support, I knew he needed help immediately. I couldn’t help but act, and I know that with your help we will chance the life of this family!!
