Saints & Symbols, Pre-Raphaelite stained glass book fund raising appeal
In 2015 Damozels & Deities, Pre-Raphaelite stained glass, 1870-1898 was published with text by William Waters and featuring photographs by Alastair Carew-Cox. Prior to that Angels & Icons, Pre-Raphaelite Stained Glass, 1850-1870 was published. The books were funded by the authors and a crowdfunding appeal. William and Alastair are keen that stained glass becomes regarded as an important art form and that the wealth of glass in British churches, much of which is falling into disrepair, is brought to the public's attention.
The third and final book of the series, entitled Saints & Symbols, the Pre-Raphaelite stained glass of William De Morgan, Ford Madox Brown, John George Sowerby, Walter Crane and Frederic Shields is being prepared. The five artists were active on the periphery of the Pre-Raphaelite circle and were responsible for varying the medium in their individual ways. All were strongly influenced by and were associates of William Morris. Although well known in other fields their work in stained glass has not previously been investigated to any degree.
Without financial help this important work on the Pre-Raphaelites cannot be published. Production costs for a book of this quality are prohibitive. William has already produced his meticulously researched text and Alastair has taken the majority of the photographs, to make it a lavishly illustrated book, but funds have now run dry and we are looking for help in order to get the book printed.
You can be part of this project by pledging financial assistance. We have some great rewards in exchange for your donation such as greetings cards with images from the forthcoming book, signed copies of the printed book or a masterclass with Alastair and William.
