Welcome to YCC's Collective Funding Project II

Join us in raising 15,000 HKD to support 'Sailor Neptune' a group exhibition and series of projects at Neptune (Chai Wan, Hong Kong) investigating the relationships between fantasy and gender. Opening Wednesday November 23, 2016 with upcoming new shows throughout the first trimester of 2017.

Throughout generations across Asia and beyond, Sailor Neptune is recalled as the queer character in the Sailor Moon manga series. Symbolically speaking, she may be considered the first lesbian archetype in one's childhood memory. Either on print or on TV, Sailor Neptune intimately appeared with her partner Sailor Uranus. Coincidentally, Uranian was the term used in the 19th century to refer to a person of a 'third sex' - originally, someone with "a female psyche in a male body" who is sexually attracted to men, and later extended to cover a number of other sexual identities. In Victorian times, the word Uranian was used to vindicate Gay emancipation by authors such as Oscar Wilde, Edward Carpenter and John Addington Symonds.

'Sailor Neptune', a group exhibition and series of projects at Neptune including Hong Kong and international artists Isabelle Ng and Christian Thompson, will centre around the relationships between fantasy and gender and address: Do we perform who we are? Do we use costumes rather than clothes to define our mutant identity? Do we fantasize our gender?

A private event with all donors and Founder/Curator Inti Guerrero will be organised in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition.

About Neptune

Neptune is a year-long curatorial project in a small unit of a neighbourhood mini-mall in Chai Wan, Hong Kong. It organises group exhibitions interrelating the work of local and international artists whose practices are relevant to both Hong Kong's art community and to the context of Neptune's surrounding social fabric.

About YCC's Collective Funding Programme

From the start YCC has wanted to revisit the notion of arts patronage in and out of Asia. In response, YCC’s ‘Collective Funding’ programme was launched in August 2016 with the aim of using the 'collective power' of its 300+ active members to fund particular projects that open and expand artistic dialogue related to Asia.
