My wife and I have started Saguaro Street Scents as something we can do as a family. Our goal is to grow this business using our online store (www.saguarostreetscents.com) and attending shows, farmers markets, flea markets and craft fairs to sell our products. We are incorporated in Arizona as a female veteran owned Limited Liability Corporation.
My wife Christine and I (David) are both retired Veterans of the Air Force.
Christine spent 20 years working in the Air Mobility Command and Air Force Special Operations Command. Her final assignment was as the Functional Area Manager for the Air National Guard in her career field. She is currently working a full-time job.
David also spent 21 years in the Air Force, but all my time was in the Air Force Special Operations Command. After retiring from flying for the USAF, I was hired to fly test for the Navy as a civilian contractor.
After Christine retired from the Air Force, the family moved to Arizona where David worked as a test driver for Nissan and Tesla. Testing ended and Christine found a job while I stayed at home and home schooled our two boys.
We have both found that making these products is very calming and we enjoy the time we all get to spend working (and getting in each other’s way) in the kitchen.
We have decided that I should stay home and try to grow the business while Christine works at a full-time job. Our goal is to build this business so that Christine can leave her job and we can spend time as a family. We have two older children who have married and moved on with their lives. We both missed out on a lot of memorable moments with our older kids because of military and other job requirements. We don’t want to repeat this with our younger boys. We are trying to build this business so we can work it as a family and get to spend time with our younger children that we didn’t get with our older kids.
We make the candles in unique containers. We have made them in beer mugs, coffee cups, buckets, teacups and other interesting things. We go to flea markets, yard sales and even the Goodwill store to find what we think would make an interesting and unique candle. We use a Soy wax in our candles and wax melts that is all natural and even FDA approved Kosher. The scents are Phthalate free, so the candles are 100% natural if no colors are used.
The Sugar Scrubs, Body Lotions and Bath Salts are all 100% natural. The scents are from natural essential oils and there are no added chemicals in the ingredients used.
We are offering gift baskets. These will be sold by package. Each package will have set items in it. For example, Package 1 would include one candle, one sugar scrub and one bath salt. We will choose the basket based on what candle container, scents and colors the customer chose.
Our goal is to raise $5000.00. This money will go towards buying containers and ingredients so we can make candles, melts, scrubs, lotions and salts and sell them at flea markets, fairs, etc. This will hopefully make us enough profit to roll back into the company so we can make and sell more. We will be using part of the money to find a used cargo trailer to carry the product to where we are selling it and buy a table to put it on along with a banner with the company name on it. All the money raised will go into the company. If we raise more than the goal amount, it would enable us to travel farther to sell at places out of our local area. This in turn should help us grow.
If we raise substantially more than the goal, we would like to build a mobile candle making trailer. We would take this to fairs, craft shows, carnivals and other events and have customers make their own candles (with our assistance of course). Customers would pick their container, color and scent(s) and we would help them with the process of turning that into a candle. We would also print up a personalized label for the candle so they can show everyone what they made. Included on the trailer would be a selection of pre-made candles, bath salts, wax melts and sugar scrubs for customers to purchase if they don’t feel like making their own candle.
All the money we make selling online goes towards buying supplies and the cost of shipping the finished product. We have been funding this out of our own pocket. All business set up expenses (LLC, website, business cards, etc.) has been paid for as well as the supplies.
If we do not reach the goal, whatever donations we receive will be used to buy supplies so we can make products. We will wait to get the trailer until we make enough profit to buy one. We have a small SUV we can use to transport the products to and from the events, it just won't hold as much.
We are going up against the large, mass production candle and bath/beauty companies. I think our main advantage is the unique, reusable candle containers and the fact that you can customize the candles and bath products to whatever you like. We made a candle that was black in a very large skull mug but smelled like hot apple pie when burned. It fit with their decor and smelled awesome. We made two beer mug candles for a home brewing friend of ours that had vanilla scent that his wife likes. They have burned the candles and are now using the beer mugs for his home brew. I think this gives us an advantage over the mass-produced candles even though they may be a little cheaper. We have made sugar scrubs that smell like jasmine and bath salts that have a tangerine scent. If it is what you like and will make you happy, we will try our best to make it happen.
I hope you think this is a worthwhile cause and will support us. If this is something you are not interested in supporting, would you please pass this around? Maybe someone you know would like to donate.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you have a wonderful day.
