My name is Kaye Atkinson-Sweat, founder of We Come to Fete. I organize adults (non-professional dancers) from across the US to dance in parades and festivals (aka "fetes"). I have been hosting dancers for almost a decade now and have witnessed a serious lack in safety protocols for participants.

October 2022, a dancer in her 50s fell face forward and had a golf ball size lump on her head. Myself and several others, who are 1st Aid certified, surrounded her. She was unconscious and her sister was trying to melt ice cubes into her mouth through her clinched teeth. I yelled "WATER" and my husband brought water bottles. I had people form a hand-link circle around her and we called for an EMT. There was no way to signify exactly where we were on the route (fencedarea of a Fairground, not on ba street). It took the EMTs 15 minutes on a golf cart, with nothing more than the little horn to beep through loud music and thousands of costumed dancers to find us. Once they arrived, they had no emergency equipment, only simple first aid, like band aids. The participant is fine, but their have been incidents in the past where the dancer was not so lucky (RIP).

I would like to organize better safety protocols. For example:

High visibility sign posts indicating where we are in the route (e.g. "sector A3") (Easy identification for location in case of emergency);

Water available for all participants;

Shaded seating area for dancers to rest and avoid the sun/heat as needed;

EMTs in the parade participant area AND free CPR/1st Aid courses prior to the parades.

These are just a few examples. In order to create this health and safety station, We Come to Fete is seeking funding in advance of the October 2023 parade.
