Saaya Foundation is registered since 22nd September 2016 with the Mauritius Registrar of Companies, Saaya Foundation is an NGO which aims at empowering women in all walks of life, contributing to a better environment for child development and supporting the most vulnerable. It has joined hands with many organizations with a similar vision across the world..

Saaya Foundation is working with several NGOs across Mauritius in different sectors which are special needs, women empowerment, elderly people and education sector.

During our visits to different stakeholders, we have found that there is a great need to empower people especially women and young adults with intellectual impairment.

We have discussed with different NGOs and we have decided to implement a project called

" Launching of Aquaponics "

at different NGOs in Mauritius to enable the people to work.

The details are:

  1. Introduction of Aquaponics system which is a combination of aquaculture (huge cultivation of fish) and hydroponics (cultivation of plants)
  2. Training of young adults with special needs and elderly people
  3. Job creation to the adults

What is Aquaponics?

The simplest definition of Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (the soil-less growing of plants)

that grows fish and plants together in one integrated system. The fish waste provides an organic food source for the plants, and the plants naturally filter the water for the fish.

The third participants are microbes (nitrifying bacteria). These bacteria convert ammonia from the fish waste first into nitrites, and then into nitrates. Nitrates are the form of nitrogen that plants can uptake and use to grow. Solid fish waste is turned into vermicomposting that also acts as food for the plants.

In combining both hydroponic and aquaculture systems, aquaponics capitalizes on their benefits, and eliminates the drawbacks of each.
