On March 13, 2018, Ryan was driving to work when his car hit some ice. As a result, his car spun, slamming head first into the median just before a tractor trailer t-boned the vehicle on the driver's side. Emergency crews promptly removed Ryan from the vehicle and rushed him to Lancaster General Hospital. The doctors there determined that Ryan broke his nose, fractured his right arm at the shoulder, but most significantly, shattered his L3 vertebrae. Later that afternoon, Ryan had surgery to decompress his spine. It was after that surgery, Ryan and his family learned what they were hoping would not be the case - Ryan would never walk again. The surgeon explained that the nerves in Ryan's spine had been seriously damaged and many had been severed, the worst case of that type of injury he had ever seen. After Ryan had a second surgery the following day to stabilize his spine, he started to regain some sensation in his legs, and a little bit of movement. Unfortunately doctors are telling Ryan that those things do not mean hope for him to regain the ability to walk. All of Ryan's supporters, however, know that with Ryan's determination and God's grace, miracles are possible!
Ryan's treatment plan is to begin with 4-6 weeks of inpatient therapy at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia (possibly more as he is non-weight-bearing on his right arm), beginning March 22, 2018. It is here that Ryan will begin to adjust to his new normal and learn about his new life. Following this stay will be outpatient therapies to continue the progress.
At this point, we are humbly asking for financial support. Ryan, along side his support system, are hoping for Ryan to re-gain his independence as soon he is ready! This means assistance with housing, a vehicle, and some medical bills along the way. Any and all donations are very appreciated. Please join Ryan's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ryanstallingsrecovery. Updates on Ryan's condition and how any funds are utilized will be posted there. Thank you!
