Rural Schools’Toilet, Water  and Sanitation Project

  Project Location

 In South-western and Eastern Uganda

  Project Target:

 2 poor rural primary and secondary schools in 2 remote parts of Uganda with population of between 400 to1,000 children each accommodating children / youth between the ages 06-19 years of age.  A combined total of 1,200 school children will benefit from this initiative.

  Aim of the project

 This is a live saving project and disease prevention initiative among school children. It aims at providing ecologically friendly toilets, clean water and sanitation facilities and sensitizes school children on the importance and use of improved sanitation in their lives and how to maintain the sanitation facilities. It also emphasizes personal hygiene of the children and uses peer education to spread the messages in these poorly served rural communities. The Ecosan toilets are recyclable when they fill up and therefore are cost effective and have low maintenance costs. They do not contaminate water sources and the human waste can be recycled for agricultural manure / fertilizers in school gardens to provide food security for the schools.

  Project Rationale:

 The project is aimed at improving hygiene and sanitation and providing basic sanitation facilities, and clean water in selected schools and promoting ecologically friendly toilets, which are recyclable when they fill up.

 The targeted schools lack these facilities including piped water, and are prone to infections and diseases resulting from lack of or poor toilet facilities, poor sanitation and dirty or contaminated water sources. Diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid, cholera and intestinal worm infections- infections which are preventable are common In the schools. These diseases are preventable and yet they cause serious infections and mayhem to children / youth including life threatening situations and sometimes deaths. It is projected that after the completion of the project, poor sanitation based infections would be reduced by at least 85%.

 Project Funding Required:

 A total of US $ 16,000 will be required from kind donors and well-wishers.
