In the year 2020 we identified a major gap where children who are orphaned and living below the poverty line where malnourished and out of school.

The local school is far and either way they cannot afford the required tuition. We identified 10 children who since then have been coming at the farm cottage for free lessons which we hold three times a week.

This program has been running since 2020 and our sessions are held by the well right under a tree which is not a conducive learning environment for children.

We face issues related to bad weather whereby the children cannot attend class.

Iromh Africa also serves meals to the children but due to financial constraints we have been limiting how much food we share from our own kitchen.

4% of our beneficiaries are coming from child headed families and this further widens the gap , where they cannot afford decent clothing and footwear.

However the rest of them are living with caregivers who are not employed and again they cannot afford to cloth and feed them. The community is laced with a lot of disparities that can be addressed with ongoing programs such as this one.

Our community children therefore due to these negative situations are left out with no plan for the future and they live each day as it comes with no further hope for a decent livelihood.

Solution

IROMHA has set a plan to construct a simple classroom block where our youngsters can study and read in safety from harsh weather and other elements, as we all know children spend more time at school and we wish to make the classroom as comfortable as possible.

Our program is not just an educational centre but we are inclined on experiential and skills training and learning.

We are not educating them but we are training them and they learn from that. To identify ones skills and talents will help us structure our own curriculum based on their needs. Learning in that way will be a fun experience as we will incorporate games as a learning mechanism.

Shifting from the term “Educating” to the term “Learning” through experience will bring value to the centre as our participants will do what they love the most while learning.

Not disputing the importance of academic education as that is required and will be provided, but we will emphasize mainly on ones capabilities because later in life these skills can save one and offer a better livelihood.

It is from our research and experience that we realized the importance of skill and talent as the current environment in Zimbabwe is offering no employment even for graduates and those with life skills, are thriving well. Life skill with education plays an important role in life and this will help them make sound decisions, think in a critical manner, solve complex programs, build healthy relationships and manage their lives in complicated environments.

The right to education and health will be realized as we will also run a kitchen each day to feed them while they are learning.

Since they do not have decent meals where they reside we are opening up this side kitchen which will provide three meals a day, a breakfast on arrival, lunch and a simple meal on departure that can sustain them over night. Our center will be disabled friendly as we have two boys who are not mobile.

Expected Outcomes

Our curriculum will be mostly structured and designed to simulate social environments for work and employment creation and other outbound activities that are beneficial to ones survival.

We expect our learners to be fully equipped with skills that give a decent life, resilience, perseverance, commitment, empathy and other crucial life skills.

What we have done so far

Iromh Africa has been offering basic reading and calculation skills for the 10 beneficiaries since the beginning of the program. We then also held interviews with the children’s caregivers, and those who are still fit volunteered to work in the garden and provide produce which will supply our kitchen. However we found it fit to give the women ownership of this garden so they can also sale their produce and sustain their daily needs at their places of residence. The school will not only benefit the children attending class but also it’s indirectly benefiting women and men who will help in the garden and the construction of our block and the maintenance. Awarding them this space has given them a sense of ownership and they have already planted sweet potatoes which are ready for harvest.

Our learning center will run 4 days per week and no uniforms are required as we will collect clothing for them from well wishers.

When we commenced our program, a local organization / group named Zimcares network assisted us with stationery and satchels which we gave to our little ones.

Currently we had to halt any sessions as the weather is not favorable. It has been down pouring for a while and we have no option but to halt any program for the youngsters.
