Over 50,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in Turkey and Syria after a two colossal earthquakes struck southern Turkey in early February.

The needs are immense. The UN says that nearly nine million people have been affected by the quake in Syria alone , while around the epicentre in Turkey, whole areas of towns and cities have been totally destroyed. While search and rescue teams have been working around the clock, many thousands of people likely still lie under the rubble of what were once their homes.

Help has been particularly slow to flow to some of the worst-hit areas in Syria, controlled by groups opposed to the g because of politicisation of aid crossing over the border from Turkey.

Turkey was already undergoing a financial crisis before the quake hit, with rampant inflation and people struggling to make ends meet. In Syria, the hardest-hit areas are inhabited by millions of people who have already suffered from a decade of war, and lived in poverty.

I'm running the full 42.2km Manchester marathon on Sunday April 16 to raise money for three organisations doing vital work to support survivors and help people attempt to rebuild their lives in both Turkey and Syria:

1. The White Helmets - the civil defense organisation operating in opposition controlled areas of Syria has saved thousands of people both during Syria's ongoing conflict and after the earthquake. They are often described by Syrians and others as true heroes.

2. Syria Relief & Development - this US-based organisation works in both Turkey and Syria to deliver emergency aid. Donations support medical care, fuel for its ambulances, shelter, and food desperately needed in the area.

3. Ahbap - a trusted Turkish non-governmental organisation providing shelter, food, and medical supplies to people affected in southern Turkey.

All donations will go to the organisations, with the total split equally between the three. I will be covering all costs associated with running the marathon myself.

Thank you so much for your support. It means so much.

(The photo is one I took of the bazaar in Antakya, Turkey, in 2016. Antakya, an ancient and beautiful city, is among the worst hit).
