One of the most powerful storms on record to make landfall, Haiyan - named "Yolanda" by Philippine authorities. I will fight against my own body and try to run for the people in Philiippine. I have never runned a marathon before and signed up for the Berkeley marathon November 24.
I am a 21 year old UC Berkeley student originally from Norway and will show my support for the people In need.
The correspondent that I have in the red cross told me many ordinary people are simply scavenging for the food and water needed to survive.
Ex: $10 will be enough to buy 100 lb of rise. That can help a lot of people who really need your help.
I will run to provide humanitarian assistance, supplies, and medical care in support of the ongoing efforts led by the government and military of the Republic of the Philippines through the Red cross.
Reports from Tacloban say soldiers have been distributing food and water to some residents and the US military has sent marines to the city.
A Philippine military spokesman was quoted as saying that over 10,000 people had died in the typhoon's aftermath, though it is clear the official death toll will rise significantly.
UN humanitarian official John Ging said: "Many places are strewn with dead bodies".
"The first priority of response teams, once they were able to navigate their way into these areas, is to mobilise the burial of dead bodies because of the public health issues," he said.
"As we get more and more access we find the tragedy of more and more people killed in this typhoon," he added.
More than nine million people have been affected in the Philippines. Many are now struggling to survive without food, shelter or clean drinking water.
Many thousands of people are reported to have died and almost 10 million people have been affected... Let us all show our solidarity with the people of the Philippines at this time of need. Every single dollar donated will be documented to the Red cross in Oakland. I will do something I never thought I could do and please show me your support. If you have any questions, email me at [email protected]!
Hughes also encourages people to visit the Red Cross’ website to make monetary donations to help with ground support efforts in the Philippines. You can also make contributions by mailing a check. If you do, make sure it is clearly labeled with “Philippine Typhoon” in memo section of the check.
The call center remains open 24/7. The number is 215-299-4889locally, and 800-RED-CROSS elsewhere.
