Every child’s early life experiences deeply impact the future of their relational and educational well-being. Investing in the developmental years of a child lays an invaluable foundation for educational achievement, good health, successful family relationships, and responsible citizenship.

On Sunday the 19th of February, I ran the Cape Peninsular Half-marathon with the goal of raising R6000 to fund a child for a year at Ubunye EduCare Centre. Ubunye is a registered NPO that focuses on catering for the education and health needs of Grade R children (age 5-6 years) in the township of Dunoon. Their vision is to “provide superior early childhood development opportunity, in poorer communities” to release encouraged and equipped children to excel in their future education. The school currently has 120 students divided between 4 classes each with its own dedicated teacher and teaching assistant. For the students, life at school involves a structured CAPS curriculum, creative and physical education, paediatric health check-ups, and two nutritious meals served every day at school. It is incredible to see the passion with which the school functions. There is such a display of genuine care and hope for the students!

Running this half-marathon became more than just accomplishing a personal goal. I’m no seasoned runner and so the process of training, preparing and running was a challenge, but I’d like to think of it as looking for an opportunity, among many, for positive change amid the challenges of life. It is about investing myself in the things in life that are valuable and uplifting!

If you would like to donate, share this initiative, or get involved, please do so! Any support would be so appreciated and will undoubtedly have an impact on the lives of these children. Whilst R6000 is the goal, it would be incredible to exceed this, and support Ubunye Educare above and beyond in its mission. Thank you!
