Hello, I am trying to raise funds to get me to South Africa to coach rugby in schools in the townships. I am trying to raise £1000 to pay for my accommodation and living costs while I'm there. I will be coaching in 3 different schools a day , 5 days aweek With children ranging between 7-13 years old. My trip will be 5 weeks long going out on 30th of august and coming back on the 4th of October (my birthday!) . I will hopefully be completing a blog whilst I am out there so you will get full up dates of my trip and see the difference this will make.

Sooooo please please please give generously! thank you!

As a new democracy many of South Africa’s institutions, such as schools, still need help in their development. The children of South Africa’s townships do not get the privilege of sport that those in the higher classes do, as sport is not yet in the national curriculum. Nelson Mandela once said that sport can ‘create hope’, thus volunteering in South Africa, will give you the opportunity to make a real difference in a child’s life.

However, despite the wonderful Rainbow Nation South Africa is today, it is a country that has suffered an arduous past, littered with race struggles, most notably through the treacherous years of Apartheid. Apartheid devastated the nation, segregating a large proportion of the population, leaving many of them living in poverty with no escape. However, thanks to the tireless work of Nelson Mandela and the large number of freedom fighters, Apartheid was officially ended in 1991 and three years later South Africa had it’s first democratic election, resulting in Nelson Mandela becoming president.

‘Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else can. Sport can create hope. It is an instrument for peace.’
Nelson Mandela, Former President of the Republic of South Africa.
