Opening the shop Roots: Modern Heirlooms has been a long standing dream of mine. Constantly frustrated by box stores stuffed with products of poor quality, I am always searching for home good items made in the USA. From cutting boards, pottery for my dishes, pillows and furniture, these things are nearly impossible to find all in one place. Shopping local reduces our carbon footprint and feeds our own country’s economy by supporting other small businesses -keeping that American Dream alive.

Roots: Modern Heirlooms will be home to an ever changing collection of home goods and unique and custom furnishings, available first in stores in the Central Ohio area but then hopefully expanding to other areas, including online. Keeping the items stocked in the store in a limited quantity run will help to promote more companies and keep people coming back to see what has changed. Think of your favorite home store (Pottery Barn, West Elm, Target, Anthropologie) with beautiful displays and unique pieces. Now imagine it all made in America, supporting other makers that are passionate about their work. That is Roots: Modern Heirlooms.

I have found the perfect space for Roots: Modern Heirlooms. It is the original post office for Sunbury, Ohio, built in 1920. The space needs some love - sanding the worn floors and bringing them back to their natural finish; fixing old water damaged (that has been repaired) tiles in the ceiling and painting throughout.

The store will also house a workshop space that will give locals an opportunity to come together and learn useful crafts. This space will be available to rent as well for those wanting to find a creative space to gather and celebrate. Lastly, the yard space out back is just big enough to become an organic community garden for the youth (and adults!) to learn about the responsibilities of gardening, agriculture and wellness.

The funding raised here would help this store become a reality by paying for the materials needed for the renovations and the supplies such as eco-conscious price tags, reusable shopping bags, workshop tables, chairs, building materials for the community garden, and the start of the inventory that will be available at Roots: Modern Heirlooms. The idea of giving a community a platform to see that you can truly be/make whatever you put your mind to is a powerful thing. I hope together we can bring that kind of inspiration to this community.

The name says it all; taking it back to my roots - my way of looking at furniture and the pieces we purchase that fill our homes. We, as people, take a lot of pride in our work and the hard earned money we make and I want the items we collect to show that pride. I want us to turn the page on the disposable lifestyle we have become accustomed to and start to really think of how each purchase we make can be inspirational as well as supporting actual people in our country that are also chasing their dreams. That is exactly what we do when we shop small. Buy pieces with pride and turn them into the new era of heirlooms. Think of your new dining table hosting holiday meals for decades to come. Let’s make a lasting impression on our communities and support each other by continuing to create something we’ll be proud to leave behind, items thoughtfully made in the U.S.A!
