Rodrigo’s medical fund

Update posted by Annika Bassing On Aug 08, 2018

My dears Friends,

Rodrigo went back to the hospital at 17th of Juli and got straight away a new catheter, an Hickman-line.

The day after (day -7) the high dose chemotherapy started for about 5-6 days. This days were already heavy for Rodrigo. The week after (day 0) he got the stem cells re-infused. This went quite fast, just a 15 minute procedure. The next 12 days were even heavier: nausea, inflammation of his mouth and throat (so he was not able to eat or drink anymore), high fever, blood transfusion,... just to give some samples.

He is already a bit better and is able to drink and eat (jellies) again. He will finally go back home tomorrow.

Nonetheless they reseted his immune system. His immune system is totally down and comparable to a baby one. So his Body has to learn how to defend,... again. That means he is unimmunized for any kind of infection caused trough bacterias and virus... The total recover will take about 6 month. He is also without any vaccinations. At the 6 month mark after the transplant a re-vaccination program will start.

He can’t wait to feel better again and start his journey of recovery.

Love your Anni

My dear friends,

Rodrigo went through six Chemo Cycles so far. The last tests went quite well - the scans don’t show any cancer anymore. Unfortunately, his heart function decreased a bit as a side effect of chemotherapy. But over all of that, it means he is in remission. To stay in remission and decrease the chance of a relapse, he‘s going to have a stem cell transplant. The procedure is going to take about three weeks. Next week he is going to start the procedure. He will stay this three weeks in the Peter MacCallum hospital.

Next week he is going to start a high-dose Chemotherapy (4 times stronger than the Chemotherapy he got before) to kill absolutely everything in his body. One week later there will be the stem cell re-infusion. The stem cells will be re-infused immediately through Rodrigo’s PICC line. After a couple of days, Rodrigo’s blood counts will be very low, in particular, his neutrophil count will be as low as zero and also the platelet count will get quite low. Most people require some platelet transfusions during this time to maintain the platelet count at a safe level. During this time it is very common to get a fever and require intravenous antibiotics. It is also likely he will need a few platelets transfusions and 1 – 2 blood transfusions. Another week later he will slowly start to recover.

The full recovery will take up to 6 months.

After all of this, he needs all the vaccinations again, cause his immune system is going to be like the one of a newborn. That also means he will be fragile to any kind of infections until his immune system ”learned” how t protect again.

This procedure is really really tough. The chemotherapy he went through before seems like nothing compared to the stem cell transplantation.

Beating cancer is a really tough job. So please keep praying, sharing and donating.

Love Annika

Hello my dear friends,

Rodrigo is doing quite well and tomorrow he is going to the hospital to get his fourth Chemo cycle..

After the second cycle, Rodrigo had to do different tests and scans. They also collected his stem cells. This procedure was really long and exhausting. So we spent a lot of time in the hospital to get all of that done. After a couple of days, we had an appointment with Rodrigo's main haematologist. She got really good news for us. Luckily all the cancer cells seem like gone. She is really happy with his progress.

After the fourth cycle, Rodrigo is going to get two extra chemo ccles, which are a bit shorter than the ones before. Afterward, he is going to get the stem cells transplantation, which is a really tough procedure, even tougher than the everything before. The whole treatment is going to end with the Radiation of his spine and head.

Beating cancer is a really tough job. So please keep praying, sharing and donating.

Love Annika

After Rodrigo got diagnosed with the Non-Hodgkins-Lymphoma and going through the first Chemotherapy Cycle Rodrigo went back to the hospital today and started straight away with the second Chemotherapy Circle. For the moment they’re planed 5 “Chemo days” ( It feels like they are really spontaneous and there is always some changes. Therefore the plan for this Circle still can change). Yesterday he went to the hospital to see his Hematologist. She is really happy with his progress and treatment. Unfortunately, through the first chemotherapy Cycle, his liver got a bit upset and damaged. But that’s nothing uncommon through the strong chemotherapy and nothing to worry about. The hematologist is really optimistic that Rodrigo will have beaten cancer by Cycle 4. The treatment gonna finish with a stem cell transplantation. If he’s gonna need radiation afterward we will see at the end of the treatment. We hope Rodrigo is doing well and he will also show hardly any side-effects like he did during the first ccle. And yes he already lost his hair, but he isn’t worried about that because he’s still good looking;).

Thank you for your support and prayers.

Love Annika

Rodrigo got diagnosed with an aggressive form of the the Non Hodgkin‘s Lymphoma/Burkit lymphoma (cancer). They found more Tumors in Spine, Hip, shoulder and Rib. The doctors are worrying cause the tumor is very close to the spine canal. That’s why the decide to start a very strong chemotherapy straight away. He is going to have 8 (21 days x 8) chemo treatments. He’s getting treated in the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Melbourne. Please keep praying, sharing and donating. It’s gonna be a really tough time for him. Love Annika Bassin

My dear friends, we feel so grateful for all your prayers and support! Rodrigo Ferrada surgery went well. They were able to remove the tumor. He has to stay in intensive care for the first night and after for four more nights in hospital. We have to wait for the result of the biopsy now.
