Riding the mainstreams – the migration patterns of Sea Turtles

Sea turtles breed in Madagascar but spend most of their time feeding elsewhere in the Indian and Pacific Ocean, but it is unknown, which populations use which region. I plan to use stable isotopes from skin samples of turtles to reconstruct their migration routes. This data is crucial for specific conservation measures.

Meeresschildkröten legen ihre Eier auf Madagaskar ab, verbringen die meiste Zeit aber in ihren Futtergebieten an anderen Stellen im Pazifischen und Indischen Ozean. Dabei ist unklar, welche Population welches Gebiet nutzt. Ich plane ihre Wanderrouten anhand von stabilen Isotopen aus Hautproben zu rekonstruieren. Diese Daten sind unerlässlich für gezieltere Schutzprogramme.

What is this project about?

I write my Master thesis on sea turtles in the Bay of Ranobe in Madagascar. These turtles breed in Madagascar but probably spend most of their time feeding elsewhere in the Indian Ocean. From their foraging areas, they come to Madagascar using the sea currents,like some form of “highways”.

There are several geographically distinct regions where they could feed, but it is unknown, which populations use which region. In collaboration with the NGO “ReefDoctor” I plan to use stable isotopes from skin samples of turtles to reconstruct their migration routes. You can imagine stable isotopes as some kind of geographical-chemical fingerprint, meaning the composition of elements such as carbon or nitrogen varies from area to area, which can be used to assign the foraging areas from which the Sea turtles came to Madagascar.

This data is crucial for specific conservation measures because it contributes to the decision making on which regions and routes must be better protected and offers better perspectives on where the money and work of conservation would be invested most effectively.

Worum geht es in diesem Projekt?

Meine Studie (Master-Arbeit) beschäftigt sich mit Meeresschildkröten in der Bucht von Ranobe vor Madagaskar. Diese Schildkröten legen ihre Eier auf Madagaskar ab, ihre Futtergebiete liegen aber an anderen Stellen im Indischen Ozean, wo sie die meiste Zeit verbringen. Von ihren Futtergebieten kommen sie dann mithilfe der Meeresströmungen, welche sie als eine Art „Autobahn“ nutzen u.a. nach Madagaskar.

Es gibt verschiedene Regionen in denen sie fressen, aber es ist unklar, welche Population welches Gebiet nutzt. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Organisation „ReefDoctor“ plane ich ihre Wanderrouten anhand von stabilen Isotopen aus Hautproben zu rekonstruieren. Stabile Isotope kann man sich als eine Art geographisch-chemischer Fingerabdruck vorstellen, d.h. die Zusammensetzung verschiedener Elemente wie Kohlenstoff und Stickstoff unterscheidet sich von Gebiet zu Gebiet. Anhand der Zusammensetzung dieser stabilen Isotope kann ich herrausfinden, aus welchen Futtergebieten die Meeresschildkröten sich auf den Weg nach Madagaskar gemacht haben.

Die Daten, die ich sammeln werde, sind unerlässlich für gezieltere Schutzprogramme: Sie erleichtern die Entscheidung, welche Regionen und Routen besser geschützt werden müssen und zeigen, wo Geld und Arbeit von Schutzprogrammen am effektivsten investiert werden können.

What is the bigger goal?

Most of us have seen ‘Finding Nemo’ and will remember the cool sea turtles. Sadly, in reality those animals have a far less laid-back life as they are exposed to lots of anthropogenic perils. Marine pollution, climate change, fisheries, destruction of nesting beaches – those are only a few of the life-threatening dangers sea turtles have to face during their lives. To ease their migrations throughout the oceans, it is crucial to know which routes they are taking in order to help with conservation measures.

The goal of this project is to gather information about these routes and provide the relevant organisations with that data.

Was ist das höhere Ziel?

Die meisten von uns werden „Findet Nemo“ gesehen haben und sich an die coolen Meeresschildkröten erinnern. Leider haben diese Tiere in der Realität ein viel unentspannteres Dasein, da sie vielen menschengemachten Gefahren ausgesetzt sind. Meeresverschmutzung, Klimawandel, Fischerei, Zerstörung der Eiablage-Strände – das sind nur einige der tödlichen Hindernisse, die Meeressschildkröten im Laufe ihres Lebens begegnen. Um ihnen ihre Reisen durch die Ozeane zu erleichtern, ist es unerlässlich zu wissen, auf welchen Routen sie unterwegs sind, damit man hier mit Schutzprojekten helfen kann.

Das Ziel dieses Projektes ist es, eben diese Routen herauszufinden und die Daten dann den entsprechenden Organisationen zur Verfügung zu stellen.

What is the money used for?

The costs for laboratory analyses will be covered by Hamburg University, but I need support for the 3-month field season in Madagascar. With the money, the expenses for the flights, accommodations and equipment will be covered. Should we surpass the funding goal, the excessive money will go to the further study of sea turtles in my PhD-thesis.

Die Kosten für die Laboruntersuchungen werden von der Universität Hamburg übernommen, aber ich benötige Unterstützung für den 3-monatigen Feldaufenthalt auf Madagaskar. Sollte das veranschlagte Ziel übertroffen werden, fließt überschüssiges Geld in die weitere Erforschung der Meeresschildkröten im Rahmen meiner Doktorarbeit.
