Mar-15 Update:

Ricci is finally at peace. We laid her to rest last Saturday; she was surrounded by friends and family.

At this point we have decided to convert the purpose of this fundraiser and have the proceeds go towards the settlement of her hospitalization bills and most importantly, Nix's education and future.

As a family, we are also deciding on which charity we will be donating a portion of the funds to. Ricci has always been an advocate of imparting awareness regarding special children and their needs. She also had a soft spot for the elderly and dogs. If you are familiar or associated with charitable institutions catering to those, we'd love to hear from you.

Again, we are so very very grateful to everyone who have supported us throughout. The outpouring of love, kindness, and generosity has been truly heartwarming.

Thank you and may God bless us all! ❤️

Mar-4

It all started a little over 2 weeks ago.

Ricci (Cher to family and relatives) had been bed-ridden for several days-- she'd been burning with fever; she hadn't eaten a decent meal in days; she'd been nauseous and overwhelmingly weak that she could barely stand on her own; and started complaining of extreme prickling pain in her feet. Her blood pressure was absurd at 180/90 and she'd been rapidly breathing like she'd been running a marathon (which she doesn't, really-- she's lazy af).

She'd been rushed to the ER 3 days prior, diagnosed with UTI, and was sent home with prescribed antibiotics.

UTI. We thought that was all it was.

An online consultation with a doctor that day had described her as "toxic and distressed" and urgently advised us to take her back to the ER.

She was initially admitted into and released from the COVID isolation unit. She was moved to a private room. And that's when the nigtmare started to unfold.

She was the clinical picture of someone with Sepsis. And Thyroid Storm.

She was, at that point, critically ill.

It was a lot to take in.

A flurry of activities and phone calls later, she was rushed to the Metro Antipolo Hospital and Medical Center Emergency Room, to be later moved to the ICU.

Countless lab tests had proven her case to be a diagnostic dilemma. Her team of doctors were frantically trying to figure out what was wrong with her while at the same time ensuring her vitals were stable.

Less than 48 hours after settling in the ICU, her blood pressure dropped to a scaringly low level.

She went into shock.

Two days prior, she had gasped out something to me back at the private room: "I don't want to die."

So she held on.

The team saved and stabilized her. We will forever be grateful.

Cher has so much to live for. She's a beautifully strong single mother providing for her only son with special needs.

She's a loving daughter, sister, and friend.

She's always been so full of life with just the right amount of snark ;p

But what she's gone through and will continue to go through may just turn her life a little on its head.

*********

It wasn't until about a week ago that she was finally diagnosed with Viral Encephalitis. A quick online search will tell you it's a life-threatening disease that is characterized by inflammation of the brain that can possibly injure it. This is a medical condition not too many people know about. I did my research and I could find little to zero literature covering this disease in the Philippine context.

It is, therefore, in the hope that this endeavor will not only help cover Cher's medical bills but also raise awareness regarding this silent but very deadly disease.

*********

If you are so inclined, your kind donation will help shoulder Cher's hospital bill, which as of Mar-1 stands at 851,743.49 pesos. She's still in the ICU which costs at least 50,000 daily including meds, supplies, and equipment.

Her strong will to live, the love of her family and friends, and Jesus's grace have gotten her this far. She's overcome the worst of the storm. But she has a long way to go to rehabilitate and to hopefully get herself back on track.

Even if you are not able to donate, thank you for taking the time to read her story. And please say a little prayer for her and her full recovery. It will definitely go a long way.
