Since February 11, 2019, our youngest cousin, Rhico, has been in the intensive care unit of St. Luke’s Medical Center. He was brought in by his family after continuous complaints of headaches and fever. His doctors later diagnosed him of having viral encephalitis - an inflammation of the brain that can cause agitation, seizures, loss of automatic functions, among others, without proper treatment.
Our cousin is the youngest among five siblings. He is now ten years old and is a grade 5 student in a public elementary school in Quezon City, Philippines. He loves superheroes, enjoys time with his family, and never ceases to light up the room whenever he’s around. He is smart, cheerful, and does well in school, but his health conditions affect his education and normal development as a child due to frequent absences.
The sudden encephalitis diagnosis comes doubly hard for the family because on top of this recent illness, Rhico also suffers from Type I Diabetes. At an early age, he was also diagnosed with Myesthenia Gravis, an autoimmune disease that makes the muscles weak. The family’s budget for medication and healthcare is already stretched enough with these two prior conditions. Yet, the family’s budget has been further encumbered to cover the medical expenses of Rhico’s father who was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2013. Making matters worse, Rhico’s father also has Type II diabetes.
Rhico is covered only by basic government insurance and is a beneficiary of the charity institution of St. Luke’s Medical Center, but these benefits cover only a small portion to the overall costs incurred thus far.
We knock on your generous hearts to share any amount to aid in Rhico’s on-going treatment and recovery. The cost of the hospitalization and treatment has become overwhelming to the family. In the first two days alone, the hospital bill amounted to PHP 250,000 (about USD 4,800) already. The family expects more tests, medications, professional and hospital fees in the coming days and months.
Any amount of help to relieve the financial stress off Rhico’s family will be greatly appreciated. On behalf of our family, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the help and prayers. We know that not all can offer monetary help but we appreciate also your sharing of his story to your family and friends.
If you would like to extend financial support to Rhico’s family directly, or offline/through other channels, please feel free to message me for details.
