"Return the Night", is based on a true story about Xu Xin, who was raped on her way home from a night out and struggles to make sense of what happened the next day.
On her way back home from a night out, the supposed joyous occasion turned around when Xu Xin was raped. With only faint pieces of memory lingering, she decides to seek professional help. But the process forces her to find out the truth behind the brutality of her injuries as medical professionals prompt her missing memories.
We follow Xu Xin journeying as a victim, trying to make sense of what happened.
Why we are making this Film:
We are a team of final year students from Nanyang Technological University, School of Arts Design and Media, and together with the director, we want to explore the importance of this matter.
In this film, we delve deep into her emotional experience, and explore this taboo and delicate topic of rape. The director wants to showcase Xu Xin’s experience in a raw manner, to understand trauma and our bondage to it in an unapologetic attempt at invoking thoughts or feelings in a really uncomfortable arena.
The trauma Xu Xin feels — it pulsates, and it’s everywhere. This trauma becomes the thing that feeds her, and letting it go is scary simply because you don’t know what life is without it anymore. Trauma becomes all consuming and sometimes there’s no right or wrong reaction to it and this is what we are trying to explore.
