Who says being not-for-profit means you can't make money?

Retirement Postponed (RP) is an online brand that sets out to rescue a generation from the 'young-middle-old' stranglehold on life expectations, to extend the middle - providing practical alternatives to the choices facing people in the later stages of a career, to answer worries and find opportunities in work, money, property and life in general.

Though kicking off from a standing start it could grow very big, very fast. We need development funding and long term sponsors. I have a plan to attract support and funding across almost the entire commercial spectrum. I also have some high-level personal connections to explore, but wouldn't be comfortable doing this before I have the project in train.

Base story: Working as a team of just three, I began putting www.retirementpostponed.com together three years ago, setting out to provide a comprehensive online resource and trustpoint for that third of the United Kingdom who are over 55 - 22 million people, targeting 10% participation. A short time later I met and took over www.RetirementReinvented.com, a much larger information base, in need updating and migrating into RP. We have been running both in tandem for the last three years. They currently provide possibly the most comprehensive free listings of Non-exec, trustee and volunteering jobs in the UK. The RP site is effectively a template for the mother ship, which we now have to build.

It has grown to a stage where RP requires a complete restructuring in order to expand, so we are embarking on a fundraising programme. I established Retirement Postponed (CIC) as a not-for-profit last year; we now have to fill the notion with actuality. Raising funds at the highest corporate level costs money; I have already put more than £100K into its development so far, which has brought us to the stage where we can make a credible case for corporate support. This programme will get us on the way.

While the not-for-profit CIC willput all its profits back into providing the service, we will engage in commercial partnerships with our sponsors, that will allow both sides and us to to make profits and grow capital value. The only difference is that the CIC's profits will go back into community.
