In February 2018 while working on Up Plastic Kampala project with Aalto University (Finland) and Makerere University (Uganda) we established the community workspace for Plastic recycling ( https://up-plastic.tumblr.com/ ). While doing field work as an architect I decided to visit Nationals theatre in Kampala. I was very sad to find out that amazing building is under the risk of demolition ( https://observer.ug/news/headlines/53323-national-theatre-to-be-demolished-for-shopping-mall.html ). Property clearance to make space for commercial development. I was very happy when the theatre staff asked me to volunteer to oppose the demolition and make alternative plans. Being an student of Creative Sustainability in Architecture Master program in Aalto University, focusing on the reuse of buildings I though that would be the greatest opportunity to help the people involved with the theatre and also do my Master thesis on same topic.
Here is where I need your help! I will need to travel to Uganda to conduct necessary fieldwork and with local team raise awareness about importance of valueing cultural heritage and opposing demolition. The traveling and stay is quite exspensive and since I do this work voluntarily for local community you can join in for the good cause! I am sure if the community wins you will be more than proud to have contributed in saving the cultural heritage and making sure glass towers do not replace the Nationals theatre building in the heart of Kampala!
Thank you for caring!
