🌊 Sail Back in Time: Support the Kerynia Liberty Ship 🌊
Join us in Preserving History, One Plank and a Nail at a Time: Kerynia-Liberty Ship Fundraiser!

About the Kerynia-Liberty (KL) Ship:
We are the dedicated volunteer crew of the KL Ship, a living testament to maritime history.

The Kerynia-Liberty is the third replica of the world-renowned Kerynia shipwreck (4th century BC - Hellenistic period) discovered 1965 and lifted in 1967. Constructed in 2002, she supports the global maritime archaeology community in its quest to uncover the seamanship of our ancient ancestors.

This ship came to life using modern marine construction techniques, in stark contrast to her sister ship and first replica of the ancient shipwreck, Kyrenia II, launched in 1987 as a construction experiment (read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyrenia_ship), which served as a tool for archaeologists studying ancient sailing techniques. You can visit the Kyrenia II in its permanent location at the Thalassa Museum in Ayia Napa, Cyprus.

We conduct experiential, audiovisual presentations at elementary schools to engage the interest and imagination of young students in the field of Maritime Archaeology. These presentations are attended by children aged 5 to 12 years.

We provide theoretical and hands-on practical training to young archaeologists, helping them understand the importance of experimental archaeology in learning about ancient seafaring, shipbuilding, and trade.

We participated in expert-led experiments ranging from loading and unloading of vessels with amphorae, sailing competencies and sail shapes used in antiquity, anchor shapes and forms, steering and steering oar positions and many more.

We have also starred in National Geographic and Discovery Channel documentaries on ancient seafaring.

With a legacy dating back only a couple of decades, our Kerynia-Liberty played a vital role in uncovering a critical era of history. Today, we are on a mission to ensure it continues to tell its tale for generations to come.

Why We Need Your Support:
The Kerynia-Liberty is now in Limassol shipyard, following its short adventure in September of 2023.

On a lovely sunny morning, Friday the 29th the KL sailed off on a yet another expert-led experimental journey with an 8-member crew to record its course and behavior.

During the journey, both rudders broke, causing the ship to become rudderless and unruly and eventually capsize. Thanks to the proper procedures taken by its crew and passengers and immediate intervention of the Coordination, Research, and Rescue Center, all eight crew members were rescued without injuries and transferred to land.

The late time of the day forced the rescue operations to cease for the day and restart with first crack of dawn the following day and it was only the day after that the abandoned ship was relocated, uprighted and safely towed to port.

The KL is in good shape but does require repairs and re “equipping” to return to the sea for more journeys .

As dedicated volunteers, we've invested our time, sweat, and love into maintaining and restoring the ship, but the scale of the project requires more than just our passion and free time. It requires your support. Your generous contributions will go towards:

🔨 Restoration: Repairing and replacing aged or broken planks and rigging to ensure the ship's structural integrity.

🌬️ Sails and Rigging: Crafting and installing a new sail and rigging to allow the ship to grace the open waters once more. Our square sail is larger than you can imagine!

⛵️Construction: new steering rudders, oars, and mast step.

🧭 Purchasing new necessary modern day technical equipment: radio, compass, GPS, radar, lightweight life jackets for crew and passengers.

🌟 Why Your Support Matters:
By contributing to this campaign, you become a guardian of maritime cultural heritage. You help us breathe new life into this iconic ship, allowing it to continue educating and inspiring generations to come. Your support will not only preserve a maritime treasure but also ensure that the lessons it carries with it are passed down to future generations.
