After the tragic and unexpect event of loosing our youngest son in '07 we found ourselves wondering why such a thing would happen (other than the medical reasons). We have 3 other children; our oldest son is 21 and is currently in the USAF, our daughter is 15 and a sophmore in HS and we have a 12 (almost 13) year old son who is in the seventh grade. Unable to have any more biological children, our thoughts turned to adoption (to expensive) then to foster care & foster to adopt.
We completed the FC training in '10 but our renovations on our old house wasn't ready and to make a long story short, we were fighting our bank (since '09) just to keep it. We finally won our case this past May. However, by that time, we had found out this old B & B located approximently 9 miles north, but still in the same school district: one we had always loved from the outside, was up for sale again at a price we couldn't pass up. Because of the situation with our other home, and because it ruined our credit even though we won the case, we weren't able to get a traditional bank loan. We are currently making our payments to my parents who stepped up and purchased it for us (it will be paid off in a few years as apposed to 20-30). As for our other house, we decided to "pay it forward" to a young family and they are currently paying us each month.
The 1860's B & B had no kitchen and the pipes were broke in that area. We had to tear up part of the old hardwood floors & replace them. We put in a whole "new" kitchen and upgraded the wiring in that area. Right now, we are working on installing an outdoor wood furnace that will heat the entire place. We had to close off a portion last winter to help with the heating cost; there is NO insulation. I use the term "new" because the entire kitchen has been redone (remember no cabinets) so far for around $350! I'm a bargin hunter for some things, but I know we can't "bargin" hunt when it comes to electrical, insulation & siding work.
HOW IT WILL HELP
Which brings me to the fundraising portion. The entire house (except kitchen, a 1/2 bath, 1 bathroom upstairs, laundry room, dinning room & basement) needs to be rewired. It has the old knob and tube wiring and in some parts, whoever had the place before it was forclosed on, has newer wire hooked into the old. It's not safe and all that has been disconnected, which leaves no electric in any of the 16 bedrooms, the sitting room, front porch, a very large living room & what will become my photography/writing/work room (because of major back issues, I can't work a traditional outside job and my photography/writing help out somewhat), at total of about 5000 sq ft! This is to big of a job for my husband to do himself because of his work schedule, it would probably be best to hire professionals for the major jobs. It also, as mentioned above, has NO insulation. It isn't built with the typical studs and traditional rolled insulation can't be used. Our options are either blown in or foam insulation. We are considering the foam insulation and have been looking into how they do it from the outside of the house. Since the sideing will need to be replaced soon as well, it could be done at the same time. We have been "blogging" what we have done so far and the FB link should be listed. I also included my twitter info in case you wanted to connect that way.
We have been waiting for over 4 years since we knew this was something that we were meant to do and maybe it answers part of the question of "why". The funds ($5000) raised would help cover some of the cost to update the electical, insualtion and new siding. We figure it will cost around $25,000 to complete all the work that is needed but don't want to ask for that amount upfront. We can't have the home inspection completed or approved for foster care until at least the electical is finished and rooms are ready for the children. I know the amount we are seeking is high, but it's not something we have on hand to have these updates started ASAP. Time is off the essance on all accounts. There are so many children that need loving homes and this one has plenty of room to at least help a few of them. I am doing this as a surprise to my husband. He works very hard to take care of us, and may soon be taking on a new position within the company that will be taking him on the road during the week. This would help eleviate some of the stress he feels on top of his 60+ hour weekly work schedule, and as mentioned above, this is a way for me to help out a little since I can't work at a traditional out of the home job. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
(It states we live in Plattsburgh, however, we are actually in North Hudson, NY, about 1.25 hours south of Plattsburgh. North Hudson, nor the town we used to live in, was listed as a choice)
***Urgent...my husband was called in to work today, 12/18/3, on his day off. He was informed he no longer had a job due to deposits, etc being off while he was away helping at a different store over the past two weeks. Since he was the General Manager, he is responsble regardless of where he is at. We are devistated and have no idea what we are going to do now. My heart is breaking into a million pieces again.
