With some backers not comfortable with internet banking, we have received $25 000 in direct donations. As a result, we have adapted the amount required on Go Get Funding to $50 000, which will also cover fees. Any funds donated over and above the costs associated with Marcus's surgery, will be donated to the Cure for Life Foundation (established by Dr Charlie Teo) and Brain Tumour Alliance Australia.
One week before Christmas we found out that Marcus, our 12 year old son, has a brain tumour.
We were told by Canberra neurosurgeons to watch and wait - not to worry, he’ll lose his eyesight first.
The watch and wait approach to this type of tumour is quite standard. The Canberra neurosurgeons informed us that they would have to cut through a lot of brain tissue to reach the tumour, resulting in significant risk of disability or death, which they are not prepared to do until Marcus is having negative health impacts, like blindness. The tumour will continue to grow, increasing the number of irreversible complications if it isn't removed.
Not satisfied with this option, Marcus saw Dr Charlie Teo on Tuesday 26 March 2013. Dr Teo advised that the tumour be removed as soon as possible to prevent any negative health impacts, including going blind and suffering seizures in the first instance.
With Dr Teo’s expertise in minimally invasive neurosurgery, he can remove the tumour with minimal risk without Marcus having to wait for irreversible damage to occur.
A $70 000 up front fee must be paid for the surgery to go ahead. We just need 70 000 people to give a dollar each.
We had been relying on the equity that we had in our home in Bundaberg to borrow against to help pay for the treatment required. Unfortunately we lost this equity when our home flooded in the 2013 Bundaberg floods.
All support of any value will help Marcus to keep his eyesight and other functions.
Thank you for your support.
