Remembering Rylie

Please meet Rylie, before we adopted her she was abandoned in the street in a bin bag by the side of the road. We completely fell in love with her when we met her and couldn’t wait to give her a loving home. Unfortunately after 10 days with us she passed away, we are heartbroken but want to raise awareness of animals in this situation and donate some money in her memory. She seemed a little nervous and shy at the beginning but loved cuddles and comfort. She wasn’t that active but seemed happy., which seemed normal puppy behaviour. However we noticed she didn’t have any appetite and wasn’t eating, and she had diarrhoea. We ensured she had water and kept her fluids up and we tried different foods, she only began to eat once we fed her wet dog food. We were glad to see some change and her finally eating but that night we believe now that she had a seizure. Which she woke up from walking into furniture and howling uncontrollably.

Obviously disturbed and worried we went to a local vet who kindly saw us free of charge and suggested to go to the 24 hour hospital for animals in Alicante. They started treatment for parvo because she showed a lot of signs for this, but whilst doing the tests she had a seizure which we both witnessed. It was an awful experience to say the least, to see someone you love in pain but unable to do anything. She stayed in the ICU, and after 4 day she was put on different medication for an inflamed stomach and intestines. She showed improvement and came home, walking and sniffing like before. Meanwhile all her blood work and ultrasound scans looked good and ‘healthy’, so there was no real call for concern and no one could explain the seizures.

That afternoon she was like normal just a bit weak after the tough week she had but unfortunately in the early evening she had another seizure, and she showed the same behaviours as the first night hence why we think she had a seizure. We monitored her through the night and took her to the vet the next day. They did a scan of her liver and more blood work incase it was creating toxins in her body, but again all seemed ok. She came home with us and we began to treat her with medicine for parasites and potassium. But day after day she started to not eat or drink and we had to do it all manually. She really showed signs of recovery with her first solid dry poo but we think the medication for the parasites was too harsh for her and gave her diarrhoea again which ultimately caused more dehydration.

One morning she was unresponsive and not wanting to move, so we took her to the vet and she was hospitalised again. After two days with fluids she wasn’t showing much improvement and still not eating. We saw her in the morning of the 28th and planned to take her to another vet who wanted to see her as he believed he could help her. But as we went to the hospital to pick her up, she had stopped breathing and they couldn’t bring her back. We were absolutely devastated but also relieved that she no longer was in any pain. We have donated her body to the veterinary university in Murcia in hope she can help future vets to save future puppies, like her, in her situation. We want to create a funding page to help a local dog homing company for all the amazing work they do for abandoned puppies, dog and cats. We really want to support them and show our appreciation for what they do in order to help all these animals live a happy and healthy life in loving homes. Conoce a Rylie, antes de que la adoptáramos, fue abandonada en la calle en una bolsa de basura al costado de la carretera. Nos enamoramos por completo de ella cuando la conocimos y no podíamos esperar para darle un hogar lleno de amor. Desafortunadamente, después de 10 días con nosotros, ella falleció, estamos desconsolados, pero queremos crear conciencia sobre los animales en esta situación y donar algo de dinero en su memoria. Parecía un poco nerviosa y tímida al principio, pero le encantaban los mimos y la comodidad. No era tan activa pero parecía feliz, lo que parecía un comportamiento normal de cachorro. Sin embargo, notamos que no tenía apetito y no comía, y tenía diarrea. Nos aseguramos de que tuviera agua y mantuviera sus líquidos y probamos diferentes alimentos, solo comenzó a comer una vez que le dimos comida húmeda para perros. Nos alegramos de ver algún cambio en ella y que ella finalmente comiera, pero esa noche ahora creemos que tuvo una convulsión. Se despertó chocando con los muebles y aullar incontrolablemente.

Evidentemente perturbados y preocupados acudimos a un veterinario local que amablemente nos atendió gratuitamente y nos sugirió ir al hospital para animales 24 horas en Alicante. Comenzaron el tratamiento para el parvo porque ella mostraba muchos signos de esto, pero mientras le hacían las pruebas tuvo una convulsión que ambos presenciamos. Fue una experiencia horrible, por decir lo menos, ver a alguien a quien amas sufriendo pero sin poder hacer nada. Permaneció en la UCI y después de 4 días le recetaron diferentes medicamentos para el estómago y los intestinos inflamados. Mostró mejoría y volvió a casa, caminando y oliendo todo como antes. Mientras tanto, todos sus análisis de sangre y ecografías se veían bien y "saludables", por lo que no había motivo de preocupación real y nadie podía explicar las convulsiones.

Esa tarde estaba normal, solo un poco débil después de la semana difícil que tuvo, pero desafortunadamente temprano en la noche tuvo otra convulsión y mostró el mismo comportamiento que la primera noche, por lo que creemos que tuvo una convulsión. La monitoreamos durante la noche y la llevamos al veterinario al día siguiente. Hicieron un escaneo de su hígado de ella y más análisis de sangre en caso de que estuviera creando toxinas en su cuerpo, pero nuevamente todo parecía estar bien. Llegó a casa con nosotros y comenzamos a tratarla con medicamentos parasitarios y potasio. Pero día tras día empezó a no comer ni beber y teníamos que hacerlo todo manualmente. Ella realmente mostró signos de recuperación de su primera caca sólida y seca, pero creemos que la medicación para los parásitos fue demasiado fuerte para ella y le dio diarrea nuevamente, lo que finalmente causó más deshidratación.

Una mañana no respondía y no quería moverse, así que la llevamos al veterinario y la hospitalizaron nuevamente. Después de dos días con líquidos, no mostraba mucha mejoría y aún no comía. La vimos en la mañana del 28 y planeamos llevarla a otro veterinario que quería verla porque creía que podía ayudarla. Pero cuando fuimos al hospital a buscarla, había dejado de respirar y no pudieron traerla de regreso. Estábamos absolutamente devastados, pero también aliviados de que ya no tuviera ningún dolor. Hemos donado su cuerpo a la universidad de veterinaria de Murcia con la esperanza de que pueda ayudar a futuros veterinarios a salvar futuros cachorros, como ella, en su situación. Queremos crear una página de financiación para ayudar a una empresa local protectora de perros por todo el increíble trabajo que hacen por los cachorros, perros y gatos abandonados. Realmente queremos apoyarlos y mostrar nuestro aprecio por lo que hacen para ayudar a todos estos animales a vivir una vida feliz y saludable en hogares llenos de amor.
