Relief for Typhoon Odette Survivors in Negros Oriental

On December 16, Typhoon Odette made landfall in the Visayas and Mindanao Islands bringing torrential rains, violent winds, floods and storm surges that rendered many people homeless, injured or dead. An estimated 16 million people in six of the Philippines' 17 regions are affected, with about 2.4 million of the most vulnerable in need of assistance. In Negros Oriental, which we have called home for many years, towns merely 36 kilometers north of where we live in Dumaguete City were hit the hardest. Many have suffered great losses including their houses, properties, livestock, and even family members. As of December 25th, the death toll in Negros Oriental alone was 75, and counting.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and other set backs, government and humanitarian organizations' aid has been scarce and disproportionate. Numerous areas remain without electricity, food, water, shelter, medicine, and other basic necessities. This has spurred on civilian groups and individuals to take the initiative and give assistance to those in desperate need. On December 24th, thanks to the generous contribution of our immediate families and friends, we were able to provide a small community in Cabanlutan, Bais, whose land and crops were decimated by the typhoon, with some food, drinking water, clothes and vitamins in time for a little relief on Christmas Eve.

However, there are still so many areas that have received very little or no help at all, and we are working on stretching the donations to provide what's needed the most. To help ease the acute shortage of clean and potable water, we have purchased a 660 liter water container and hired a truck and driver to deliver drinking water to the remote areas in Bindoy and Ayungon, With enough funds, we are hoping to purchase another 660 liter container and hire another truck to cover more areas and do deliveries six days a week for the next month, possibly two, until public water supply services resume.

Our goal is to raise 203,000 pesos in order to make this water delivery run possible for the next two months. To break it down, a 660 liter tank is 11,000 pesos (about $216 USD). 2,000 pesos (or $40 USD) pays for one run of one truck with 660 liters of water including the driver and gas for the vehicle. We are aiming to send two trucks per day which will provide 10 liters of potable water per household, helping about 132 families per day.

There is no donation too big or too small. Any help you can give is appreciated by so many, more than you'll ever know. We personally guarantee that every cent goes towards our water drive and any additional funds we receive will be distributed in aid supplies, building materials, and other relief efforts as needed.
